Silicone brake fluid conversion - existing system

Hi All,

I totally agree with John on the vendor potentially questioning the source of a problem when DOT 4 is replaced with DOT 5.

Keep in mind that the cost of DOT 5 is much higher then that of DOT 3/4 and those with a short focus (i.e. rebuilders) will use the less expensive more commonly used fluid. Since my DOT 5 maintenance time horizon is equivalent to a few cycles of my DOT 4, the overall cost would be reasonably equal with the added benefit of much less effort and involvement.

So, it seem that if you have a brake component rebuild and are or intend to using DOT 5, I suggest you tell the Rebuilder and get his warranty buy-in prior to sending your components. Also, be aware of what fluid he uses for testing so you know whether you it will need cleaning prior to re-installation.

Can now report successful bleed of DOT 5 in my all-new system. Solid pedal. Thanks to Randy for his posting on his recirculating system.

Some folks online have experienced trapped small bubbles taking forever to escape and resulting in a spongy pedal. I did not find that to be a problem. Hot weather may help.
