Side versus rear exhaust

Anyone know how loud the side exhaust is compared to the rear exhaust while bieng fed through a header and 2" exhaust pipes?

What good hearing I have remaining would happen to be in my left ear which needless to say would be closest to the side exhaust! I guess that's what they invented ear plugs for.

Well the decibel rating is beyond me but I guess it would sound grrrreat I am contemplating removing the standard tail end section on my BJ7 and replacing it with a side exit this year.

Hello Money Pit, i agree with editor Reid. I can't imagine driving any great distance sitting next to the exhaust pipe. I did it myself once on my BN1 in OZ and it was bad enough and that was a RHD car. I'm sure that some mountie would take offence at you wearing ear plugs. Do yourself a few favors save your hearing (as you said what bit you do have left) and put the pipes out the back. Regards, BUNDYRUM.
 
Did the same to my BN1 years ago also BUNDYRUM, now have it set up with a removable section that allows both configurations depending on your needs/desires
 
They are referred to as leaf blowers. But hey, if it blocks out the booming sound form the rice rockets' speakers two hundred feet ahead......
 
I have side and love it. Sounds great and not too loud at all.
I would not have it any other way.

Of course loud is directly related to what muffler you have.
Yes they are leaf blowers alright. I have fun with that.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

I would be running either system with the DW header and 2" exhaust. With that said my neighbours would probably be forever grateful if I ran it out the rear which I think will be loud enough. Part of the reason I liked the side was for extra clearance of speed bumps and now in my community speed humps. I kid you not!

Its not the exhaust but the sump plug ya gotta worry about! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
It's usually the parts between the front & rear wheels that get hung up on the speed bumps. As the wheels get on the bumps, the whole car, including exhaust raises. I have mashed a muffler, see pic, but never a tail pipe.

I recently switched from side exhaust to rear exhaust on my 100--I cannot quantify the difference but I can tell you that it is considerable.

BTW I have the DW large-bore exhaust system.

Why would you want a side exhaust? Does it affect the performance of the car?

Just wondering (Probably shouldn't wonder aloud.)

I guess the same reason the rally cars ran them there! I'll either start learning sign language or better yet run it out the rear.

I originally went to side pipe to gain back some ground clearance lost when I added the DW AL head and big-bore exhaust. When I replaced the rear springs and got back an inch or so of clearance I also switched back to rear exhaust.

I think side pipes make the car faster just as do racing stripes.

No other than reasons than it sounds better to me as the driver and looks cool.

I think the works rally cars put them there to stop them getting destroyed on the yumps. They tucked them up into the cills.
