shocks or levers "survey"

Re: shocks or levers "survey"

I'll agree lever shocks last longer...don't you agree, though, that if they were superior modern mfg's would use something like that over the tube design?

Even if it's more expensive, you'd assume high end or performance-oriented cars would utilize this more expensive design if it were superior.

Just adding fuel to the fire. I don't forsee any huge difference between the two in a spridget.

Re: shocks or levers "survey"

I'm sticking with levers. I don't know if the argument has any merit or not, but I've heard that tube dampers put undue stress on the mounting points the Spridge wasn't designed for. Far as I'm concerned, it's not worth the risk of a shock punching a hole in my wheelwell...my levers work just fine.

(Any of you fellows hear of this over-stress story?)

Re: shocks or levers "survey"

I agree with Tony. Why spend $40 to $60 for brand new shocks that will probably only last 5-8 years when you can spend $300 for a pair of rebuilt dampers that will last, depending on the rebuild, 10-20 years. This is a no brainer.

Is it? At $60 a pair, you can replace them every 5 years for 20 years and only spend $240 not $300. If they cost $40 a pair and last 8 years then it will cost $120 for 24 years of service. If the levers last for 10 years than the cost is $600 for the 20 year service.

"this is a no-brainer"

Re: shocks or levers "survey"

A little sarcasam

Re: shocks or levers "survey"

I really think it comes down to personal choice. Nothing on these cars makes sense financially, so it's just a matter of what you want. For me, I like to keep things stock-ish (so I'll do a 1275 upgrade, but keep the 4-speed). Again, for me, the lever dampers work just fine, so they stay.

If the tube shock conversion is what you want, then go for it. Most important thing is to get out and drive!

<span style="font-style: italic">(I should take my own advice on that one and get to work so I can go drive too.

Re: shocks or levers "survey"

A very little, I hope. Not trying to be a smarta$$ If it was too much I apologise , not my intent.

Re: shocks or levers "survey"

I totally agree with Drew!!! Geeesh! Which is bluer, the ocean or the sky? Which blue do you like better?

Should you keep the SUs, switch to a Weber or EFI? Should you keep the smooth-case or upgrade to a rib-case or go with a 5 speed? The list goes on and on! Each one of you guys has a pet car that you envision molded to your needs/tastes ranging from OEM to radical custom to street racer to full-blown racer. Rather than dwelling on personal preferrences, the discussion should be on the pros and cons of each modification, cost vs, performance, etc.

Re: shocks or levers "survey"

Nah, Westfield....no problem from this end...I just disagree with your longevity figures but that's okay too.

Skye's azure blue down here in Alabama...what about out there?

Re: shocks or levers "survey"

alrighty then!
thx for all the input....
ive decided to go with levers.
1. no modding needed
2. cost about the same
3. if it works, im happy with it

guess i better investigate what
really is going on under there...
i just assumed shocks because i
havent replaced the rear ones..yet.
my car drives fine, far as i know,
and sits fairly level with me in
the drivers seat, its the passengers
that cause the tire to rub on bumps, etc..
it could be my 5 1/2 inch rims and fat
175/85 (?) tires  ...z

Tony, I was just using the best and worst case scenarios stated in the post to which I was replying.

It is currently 108.1F under partly cloudy skies in Tucson.

Re: shocks or levers "survey"

I went with the tube shocks. I could have them off in minutes and put the orifices back in the levers pretty quick, but after making the stuff for the tube shocks myself, I got a pair of shocks for a 1984 dodge colt(saw most of this on a website) in sale for 19.99 and the difference is pretty awesome. They are still 19.99 at oreilly for gas charged monroe shocks, I just checked. I have not spent $300 any one thing for this car yet (except the paint and supplies) and I am not going to start yet. I only did the front. I should have done the rear too, but they seem to be still ok.

Re: shocks or levers "survey"

Lever shocks when new or new rebuilt from Peter C are garanteeded for life. How long do you plan to live.

Re: shocks or levers "survey"

and more to the point - how long does Peter C plan to live

I'm doing pretty well, thank you very much. LOL!

I will be doing a lever shock tech session at Lake of the Ozarks. Bring your questions!

If I can get there. Creek's gotten pretty high.

Peter

Re: shocks or levers "survey"

Looks like I will be doing a front spring change tech session. Plan to supervise, hehe.

Re: shocks or levers "survey"

Forgive me if this is in the works and I am recommending something that's in the works....

Perhaps it'd be possible to videotape these tech sessions and have them available to everyone? How helpful would that be - in the future, link to a tech session to explain how something is to be done?

Hey, Jack,
You're going early I believe. Have you heard whether the storm last week affected the immediate show area? I know Osage Beach is 100+ miles west of the Mississippi so there should not be flood plain issues...I was just wondering about local problems.
