TR6 Shift lever

My brother, a TR4 owner, decided to take my 6 for spin. He hopped in, cranked it up, pushed in the clutch, and then, assuming the shift pattern was the same as his TR4, he pulled UP on the shift lever, intending to then push it to the right and back. Instead, when he pulled up, the shift lever pulled right out of the linkage. I have removed the shift console cover so that I can reconnect the shifter. The shift lever is splined at the bottom but I see no way, e.g., a set screw, to fasten it more firmly to the linkage. Am I missing something?

A photo would be a good idea. No, there should be no way to pull it up too far, as there is a steel cover that goes over the ball (with a hefty spring between them). The TR6 arrangement isn't identical to the TR4, but it's close. I suspect you are missing some parts.

Or maybe you have some sort of conversion transmission? A stock TR6 shift lever doesn't have anything I would describe as "splines". Hmm, unless maybe the upper part pulled out of the rubber joint to the lower part? I've never seen one broken there, I'm not sure what is inside the rubber joint.

Here's a nice photo I just found. Item 31 is a TR4 lever, Item 32 is TR6. Items 35, 36 and 37 are the cover and spring I mentioned.

And #38 is pretty important to keep the lever attached to the gearbox top cover.

Strange you should mention that; TR6 doesn't have 38. There is no hole through the ball, just slots where two guide pins (one on each side) ride to keep it lined up. Item 70 (plus locknut 71) in this drawing. (Later, it changed to a special bolt that didn't need a locknut; but some of them had a 2nd threaded section and a nut for a support brace.)

That's right I think my 4A had two shorter bolts on the edges also but things get swapped between cars and I might be confusing it with the HVDA shifter housing.
