... should my pump make a rhythmic ticking sound every few seconds while underway?

You should hope so.

LOL - You ain't kidden, coming from one who went through H@#l learning why one of the causes of stalling was because of a bad (clogged) fuel pump.

I've never had my rear seats out--think they're held in with some studs that require unbolting from underneath?

They are just self tappers normally, which makes the seat holes very useful access points.

The pump is a solenoid driven rubber diaphragm type. As it forces petrol (gas) towards the Carbs it reaches a point when electrical points make contact and pull it back so it can repeat. This is why it taps continuously. They last longer with a diode across the points to remove the spark and not all have these, so it's worth checking.

Late models were "improved" with fixed studs, so that they could rust, seize and break off.

I did manage to get the RH seat pan off to fix a leak at the pump, through perseverance!

Sounds as though fitting aluminium captive nuts and stainless steel screws will cover it and make access for servicing easier.

Mine's a BJ7 with self tappers, so food for thought.
