TR2/3/3A shaved heads

I am sure that would be why, there is a big "ledge" which gets in the way of gas flow, particularly on the inlet valve. Shaving the head down makes it much thinner, and most of the rest can be ground off with a Dremel tool, which helps enlarge the combustion chamber so a usable compression ratio can be reached.
 
My TR2 head required shaving. One of the things that really concerned me was the cup that was milled around the intake valve. Sorry this pic is so bad...





It's all blurry, but you can just make out that I can put my finger almost 1/4" into this relief pocket.

What concerned me is that as you shave the head, the pocket starts to open up the chamber into the head gasket bead region that you can see on the top pic. It leaves very little room between the combustion chamber and the head stud hole. Are the racers Who are using deeply shaved heads doing something to ensure the head gasket seals this spot? Perhaps something along the lines of Randall's copper wire that he solders to the gasket?
 
My own experience has only been with 86mm liners, and I found the fire ring of the Payen gaskets I have used have not given problems. I have not used any special head studs or other techniques to safeguard the gasket.
My compression ratio is only 9.7, so as to use Sunoco 94, so this may be a factor, or I may have been lucky!
