A new thread to report "post-Sandy" stories.

...

We had a 14 foot storm surge in lower Manhattan. And today the Stock Exchange is closed due to emergency for the second day in a row - first time since ... 1888!

...

Tom

You do know those subways are history, right? Saltwater, outside third rail power, grounds, connections, trackside monitoring (and between tracks), rail joints, electric switch machines, cabling......this could be bad.....and depending on how bad, you may not see those work again this year.

Watching Discovery Channel (Daily Planet show) right now, I believe they are going to be discussing that issue...

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

Aint too much year left Dad.

Aint no way, now how I'd EVER live there. When I went w/ Kelly and saw that Manhattan is indeed an island....with entirely more people than it should have livin' on it.... I then decided that living there would be too nutty for me.

Down here most supervision is mostly suggested and most areas are self regulatin'

Please see "Nial et al" for all of Nial's posts. There are more posts. I didn't read enough. sorry. And yes, we wait.

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

One of my sons lives and works for the power company in New Jersey. He lives in Burlington and they lost two large trees from high winds, fortunately none hit the house. They have no electricity, but he has a large generator hooked up to his house and is also supplying electric to his next door elderly neighbors so they will have heat and no loss of food in the frige.(No charge)! Nice kid! Proud of him. Needless to say, he and his fellow workers will be very busy for a few days. PJ

Good for him! That's the thing that gets me; I hate to see old folks in situations like this. The younger set can fend for themselves.

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

Just found that my wife's aunt on Long Island got 4' of water in her home. Shades of Katrina. Cept it drained out the next day. Ours in N.O. stayed for a week.

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

I spoke to my sister tonight; she lives on the north shore of Long Island. She is still without power and heard on the radio that there are some people knocking on doors and identifying themselves as being from the power company... once the door is opened, they rob the victims.
What kind of animal would do that? Unbelievable!

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

Anyone heard from martx-5 (Art). Hope he and his family are well after the storm.

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

Let's please keep this thread on topic - people who have weathered the storm checking in.

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

We're good!

Just got power/cable back.

We are fine but lots of tree and power line damage around here. In -laws (88 years old) and younger daughter have no power. Older daughter got power yesterday.
Younger daughter and hubby with twins are staying with us for the last 2 days, but I can't get the in-laws to come over, so we keep going to them to refill the generator we brought over. Local gas station lines are 3 hours long, so I am going to drain MGB today to get gas for generator.

My relatives from the UK just called to see if we are OK.
We'll survive.

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

Glad to hear your all ok Nial. You went dark there for a while so we were worried.

Boy does that sound familiar. They aint budgin' too. Can't say I blame 'em. I find the older I get, the less I will tolerate being displaced. cater to them now and you're will do the same fer you.

Glad to here you're o.k, was just thinking about you. Looks like you made it out just in time. Folks get twitchy around day four or five. It's all good till the generators runs dry. Gonna be some interesting tales come outta this one. Lotta city folk don't know how'da make due.

How's your fuel situation?

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

:savewave:  Thanks, Nial.

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

Looks like some fun roads out your way. With Power and gas folks there will survive. Now if the generator would go through less gas, my 6500 watt Chinese generator uses close to a gallon an hour. Not inexpensive to operate.

Yeah, the old folks won't come over here but they are glad we will go over every day and refuel the generator that we brought over.
It would be <span style="text-decoration: underline">so</span> much easier if they'd stay with us.

Average gas station line is 2 to 3 hours. Most are cash only and many have $50 max. I just drained the last out of the MGB. I still have about 4 gallons of 114 octane race fuel for tomorrow. I think the gas problem is a lot of stations with no power combined with panic buying. By tomorrow as more and more folks get power, the gas will get easier to find. I can easily get fuel near my older daughter's place, but that's over 100 miles round trip.

Looks like folks on Staten Island are not doing so good.

As many people as there are without power and who need help, you would think that these states would welcome ANY help. Not so if you go to help in New Jersey and you're not union.

Alabama Utilities workers turned away - not union? We don't want your help! :madder:

Huh ?!?!?! I've never heard of such a thing! Did you read the last comment? :

"Bill Yell, spokesman for Huntsville Utilities, said nine of his employees are currently helping with recovery from Hurricane Sandy and had no union-related issues. "That's a rumor," he said. "We are starting work this morning with Long Island Power Authority. We were headed to a New Jersey utility but they had all the crews they could handle." A spokeswoman for Joe Wheeler Electrical Membership Cooperative said the crews from Trinity also are assisting with storm recovery and, in fact, are unionized. "It is not true for us," she said. "I don't know how we got lumped in there (in that report). We sent eight guys to Maryland, not New Jersey. They have been there since before the storm but they've finished work and are headed home this morning."

I still don't understand even that. Like there isn't anything else for them to do in the surrounding area. What's funny about this, Southern linemen are the best there are. I've seen 'em on poles in 50 mph winds and driving rain. Needless to say, our power was only out 15 minutes.

I don't understand the thinkin' up there. :confuse:

'Round here, we offer 'em supper... :thankyousign:

On a better note:

"There was increasing worry about the elderly. Community groups have been going door-to-door on the upper floors of darkened Manhattan apartment buildings, and city workers and volunteer in hard-hit Newark, N.J., delivered meals to senior citizens and others stuck in their buildings.

"It's been mostly older folks who aren't able to get out," said Monique George of Manhattan-based Community Voices Heard. "In some cases, they hadn't talked to folks in a few days. They haven't even seen anybody because the neighbors evacuated. They're actually happy that folks are checking, happy to see another person. To not see someone for a few days, in this city, it's kind of weird.' "

YEAAAAY !!!

OK, I actually <span style="text-decoration: underline">read</span> that article and here is part of what it said:

<span style="font-style: italic">"At this stage, it is not clear who is alleged to have turned the crew away and the company that employs the affected workers has denied the claim," said IBEW President Ed Hill in a statement. "IBEW local leaders in New Jersey have reiterated <span style="text-decoration: underline">what has been the long standing record of our union – in times of crisis all help is welcome and we pull together with everyone to meet the needs of the public.</span> We have communicated this to the office of New Jersey Governor Christie as well." </span>

So yes, it sounds like some unknown scam-artist did try to arm-twist them, but that hardly represents the IBEW viewpoint nor the viewpoint of people in New Jersey.
If someone believes scammmers are unique to New Jersey, I have a bridge to sell you.

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

Thanks Nial.

Especially in this time of crisis, let's hope we verify details before we leap to judgment and condemnation.
