Sandy up-dates - please check in!

A new thread to report "post-Sandy" stories.

We have about 600,000 households in Connecticut without power as of 6am EST (Tuesday).

There are two houses in my "neighborhood" - the only houses in the entire town that still have power. Roads covered with water and broken tree limbs. Still dark here, so no pictures yet.

Here's a couple views of Manhattan you've probably never seen before. Most of the island in the dark, and a flooded MTA (subway) tunnel.

We had a 14 foot storm surge in lower Manhattan. And today the Stock Exchange is closed due to emergency for the second day in a row - first time since ... 1888!

Despite the continuing rains and winds, when the sun comes up there should be some *interesting* pictures.

Re: Sandy up-dates

Tom, good to hear from you. We posted simultaneously. Perhaps we need to combine them. I don't know how to do that but you on the other hand...

Good to hear your "voice."

Re: Sandy up-dates

Glad to hear from ya, Tom.

Now we need to have Nial pipe in.

Re: Sandy up-dates

Tried to delete but got message that post may not delete as it has replies. So noted on my post and referred to your post.

Oh my such a show of nature being boss. Will check in to see if there are any needs we can personally help our community with.

Re: Sandy up-dates

Success! Now we won't all be confused by two posts. All we need to do now is check in from time to time to see how our buds weathered this Superstorm. Yah, I know - a silly pun but please let me be the first this time!

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

So far so good in the north away from the coast. Lots of folks without power in southern Maine. Raining and warm now, with some thunder.

Obviously NJ and NY bore the brunt of this.

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

Seems Dihrdogenmonoxide proved to be a bad news after all. I vote for a citywide ban.

yeah but they would just water down the legislation. we had 40 thousand without power here last night and one woman killed by a falling/flying sign. Lots of wind but nowhere near what they were expecting.

Almost as funny as towns that outlaw nukes. Tel that to one falling from 30,000 feet!

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

Can't help wondering how Nial is doing?

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

Basil - Nial lives in northwest New Jersey. Here's a current map of power outages there:

There's lots of tree clearing and line repair going on all over New England and the mid-atlantic states. May be several days before we're all back on line.

Lost power here at 1930. Back on around 0400. I've heard there were 70+mph gusts recorded at the jetport but nothing like that here. I'm surprised the power went out at all. The power flickered off/on with seconds in between and did the same thing the first time they tried to turn it back on. Haven't seen that before. Must have been something other than a tree downed line?

Fingers crossed for BCF'ers in NY, NJ area...

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

We lost power are 1900 on Monday, and got it back at 1300 today. No water in the basement, and no trees down on our property. Our area was spared most of the storm's wrath, but there are lots of trees down around town too.

I recall he was traveling to parts elsewhere (don't remember where)?

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

"Yep. Thanks!

Already tested my sump pump and emergency generator.

We're traveling about 100 miles south this weekend (not a great idea but it's granddaughter's first birthday), so we're already extra wary. We'll be taking the Chevy Express van instead of the Accord (taller for deeper puddles) and we've booking a room for Sunday night in case we can't get home.

We just got a contingency plan from our college in case there's an emergency closing on Monday or Tuesday.

Be safe, everyone"

This was I believe Nial's last post. Not sure where Northwest New Jersey is so I guess this isn't all that helpful.

Re: Sandy up-dates - please check in!

Now we wait...

You do know those subways are history, right? Saltwater, outside third rail power, grounds, connections, trackside monitoring (and between tracks), rail joints, electric switch machines, cabling......this could be bad.....and depending on how bad, you may not see those work again this year.
