Samba link paint removal spray

Haven't tried that yet.... Let us know...

I did spray it on my crusty BBQ.... worked wonders after soaking for a few days and a hose to spray it off...

Is this a magic elixir or what???

the test today ,

take old engine cover ,

Dawn on one side
99 cent store degreaser on the other side

plastic wrap over the wet area , then put the whole thing in a plastic trash bag and store it in the shade ,

Will let you know how it works tomarrow.....

then I might try oven cleaner , but I am a little concerned what oven cleaner will do to aluminum...

I have an ironic twist to add to the thread.

I've tried the Dawn PD on several sections of the Spitfire. I've used it primarily on the floors but I've also used it on some of the removable metal bits. Each time it's softened the paint to the point that it was easily removed with a wire brush.

However, I've had my first total failure and it is a bit ironic. Those who went to the Samba web site and read their thread will remember that this all started 2 years ago when a guy's wife accidentally left oversprayed Dawn PD on a range hood, removing its paint. I don't throw anything out and I was going to strip the paint off a steel panel removed from our old dishwasher. I assumed this would be the same type of paint that was on the range hood and that the stuff would easily come off with the Dawn. After soaking for 2 days under plastic... the Dawn hadn't even touched the appliance paint... not one bit... not even where the paint had scratches through to the metal.

I still like the Dawn PD, but if you read through the Samba thread you'll remember several people found things it did not work on. I can now confirm that.
 
That's is not paint is it. That's baked on special stuff.

The dishwasher panel appeared to be covered with a spray paint, not powder paint. It could have been a baked spray though.

What surprised me was that the Dawn discovery involved the accident where it took the paint off a range hood... which should have had similar paint to the panel it didn't work on for me.
 
normally ranges are porcelain at least the older ones ,
my friend restores them......

OK.....

first part of the test done ,
I left the dawn on overnight and the 99cent store degreaser on the other side ,

probably 18 hours later I removed the plastic bags and stretch wrap that was directly on the panel,

99cent store degreaser did NOTHING ,
the Dawn softened and raised the top coat of paint (not factory paint) so it was easy to just brush off, but it did not touch the second coat....

so second part of test , put Dawn on the 2nd layer and see if it softens it,
thats been done and we will see how it looks in the morning

I don't doubt it, but neither I nor the guy who started the Samba thread were working with the range itself. His was the range hood.

I'm not saying anything against the Dawn PD, I'm sold. I'm just pointing out that there are paints that it will not touch. This echos the findings on the Samba.
 
ALERT!!! For what it is worth, my wife bought 6 bottles of it the other day at the grocery store because it was marked "DISCONTINUED"...I don't know if it was because our grocery store chain (a local chain called "Weis Markets") was going to discontinue to carry it or whether it was going to be discontinued by the manufacturer, but she grabbed some up while she could for me...what a gal! :thumbsup:

update on the update ,

the second coat did not do anything on the base coat ,
no idea what the base coat is made from , its a 600 fiat.

So I would say it works , will have a cheap respray off , after that you just have to be lucky with what the base coat is.....

Excuse the interruption here. Wife and I were in Wal-Mart grocery section last Friday and employee was re-stocking the shelf with Dawn PD. Both Wal-Marts here in town stock it. Must be a 'Weis choice' not to handle it. Pun intended.

That's my .02 worth.

I was in our Wal-Mart yesterday and was going to pick up more Dawn PD. The entire shelf where it had been... was gone. Hopefully they'll still carry it and I'll be able to buy more when I visit next time.
 
Doug,

I have only found Dawn PD in the grocery section of both Wal-Mart stores here. I looked at two Home Depots and three Lowe's here in town and never found it. Of course, the people who work there have no clue anyway.

only Ace hardware at $3.50 for the 12 ounce bottle

I'll be checking at Wal-Mart again in the next week or so. I'm hoping that it was just re-moved from the shelves while they were re-organizing. Before finding it at Wal-Mart I checked the Ace near work. They don't stock it but they will order it by the case if you want it. They checked for me at that time (3 weeks ago?) and said there was plenty in the Ace warehouse. At the risk of sounding like a commercial... the Wal-Mart price was much better than Ace.
