Run on.

I have some run on after turning her off.
New points, condenser, cap & rotor. Adjusted the valves and set the timing. (need to re-check) Carbs are clean and it is running & idling nice. Gas tank drained & gas is new but 89 octane. The car came with a small bottle of lead additive but I have not put any in.
What could be giving me the run on.

Forget the additive, it's "snake oil". The low octane is now the focus. These engines want higher octane than is now available, so 93 is actually as LOW as should be run. I think that's the problem.

Concur, use the highest you can get. However that said, it is also a function of worn parts to some extent in my experence. Dumb things like cam shaft gear to dist, dist bearing, etc etc. Sooo, higher octane is the fix usually and works with american iron as well.

I have about 3 gallons of 89 in her to get it running & clean out the rest of the system. I played it a bit safe & installed a fuel filter at the carb that I can always take off after it seems that every thing is A-OK. (prabably will leave it)
Check these out.

The gooey carb stuff was obviously from the old tank. The tank has been replaced but, from sitting in a cozy garage, I am sure a bit more rust dust collected inside.
I will get 93-O in her after I get it on the road which I hope to be in the next few weeks.
Lets see... entire brake & clutch hydraulics to go. I smell more posts.

Good cleaning job on the float bowls!

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif Nice work Vincent!

RE: more posts... BRING 'EM ON!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

BTW: izzat shifter in BACKWARDS?!?!?

Thank you, thank you.!

Eehh, what shifter?

The other pics on his site the ones labled MGB I think.

Yup. The shifter in your '67 MGB-GT. It's in bas-ackwards!

I take it that is an easy fix?

Muhahahaaa!! Compared to what? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Actually, yup it is: Four trim screws and a circlip. But be prepared to be frustrated a bit by the spring under the retainer on reassembly. Kinda like snake wrasslin'... just when you think you GOT th' beastie, zip! It squirms in another direction.

Does this apply to 1972-1974? I get run-on as well some of the time. The car's a 74, but the engine's a rebuilt 72. I've replaced all the ignition stuff like points, condensor, cap, wires, and plugs recently. The timing looks right with a timing light. The carbs may not be spot-on for the right mixture, but they're not too far off. Might be time for the yearly adjustment. I run 87 octane year-round right now, but am open to suggestions. But these gas prices... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Thank you,

Yeah, the prices are kickin' all our butts. And yep, I'd say you should run the highest "octane" you can get in an LBC.

Do you have the 74 carbs Will'm, or the earlier ones? Reason I ask is the pop-off valves in the throttle plates can do this too. But I think we went thru this before.

What about an octane additive? Is that another "snake oil"?

We could argue th' toss on octane boosters for days, but the bottom line would still be: save your money. They modify the burn characteristics of the fuel, mostly to lengthen burn time. A "trick". Once the benzine ring derivative we call "gasoline" has been knitted together in the refining process it is *extremely* difficult to modify. A bottle of voodoo chemistry dumped into the filler neck ain't likely to do it. You'll be better off just adding three or four gallons of 93 octane gas to the remaining fuel in the tank.

Now if you had access to some AVGAS.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Use to go get a tank of avgas to top off before every race weekend. Made us think we were bad anyway.

Mornin' Jack!

Sunday mornings slopin' around the local airport with a gas can and a fiver... the good old days! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Guess we the early birds on Sunday Doc.

Shell off to the blasters tomorrow, no clue when he will get to it. Just fits this stuff in around his commercial work but no prob the wife says. Her check book can stand a break.

However my garage is going to look naked for sure. Still a few items to clean up and some clamps that I need to get made for the rear springs, no biggee just a pain.

Lots of yard work to do, had a real soaker last nite and you can see things growing.

Jack

We got zero rain here. Things are startin' to shrivel. A cricket singin' could start a brushfire.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif I can picture it happening too.

We got some rain couple days ago, now it's just hot n humid. Watched all the freshly fallen rain rise back up about an hour after it quit, into a nice big cloud that moved on to the east.
