GT6 Rough GT6--your thoughts?

Hello all,

I'm from the Lotus forum, been working on a 74 Elite, but I've come across a very rough GT6 at what seems like a fair price for its condition, about $1,500 USD. It's a 1970 or 1971. The seller says "1971 GT+" but I read that GT+ was only 1970 and known in the UK as MKII.

The downside is that the head (and valve cover, etc.) is missing. Otherwise, the block, intake, exhaust, etc. are all there and seem ok. Unless the block is cracked, I can handle rings and seals.

Question, what to do about the head? GT6 heads appear to be rare. Can I swap another Triumph head? I heard the TR6 head is a bolt-one, but is there any compression issue? Lot's of TR6's where I live.

Thanks for anything.

Dave

Got a commission number? Barring that, is it "squaretail" or "roundtail"? (Former would be +, latter would be Mk3.)

Shouldn't be impossible to find a head. I think TR6 heads are very similar, but I don't know offhand about interchangeability. Hopefully someone else will.

Hopefully for $1500 it's pretty good otherwise....

Hi Dave - welcome!

Not uncommon for a 1970 to be registered as 1971, so I wouldn't sweat that too much. I've never looked for a GT6 specific head, rounding one up for a TR6 isn't overly difficult. I'd post an add or two here, on VTR etc...

Is the engine free still?

Body condition? Drive train etc?

Generally speaking, body condition is more important but if she is basically a shell as Andrew suggests it should be a solid one for $1500.

FYI - we LOVE pictures.

Keep us posted!

You can have the head out of my 71 TR6.
Ironic, the head on it now is a GT6 head.

$1500 does sound like a lot - I walked away from a '73 GT6 a few months ago beacuse it had rust in the floors, sills and roof. It was complete and ran, though - and that was too expensive for me at $500...

I have a head off of a GT6. It's a bit rusty and will need some work. You pay shipping! $1500 does sound a bit steep for what you described. Any pics?

Hi Dave, $1500 does sound kind of high for the condition of the car your describing. For comparison take a look at this GT6 on ebay, currently the bidding is only $306.

Man... if that car were closer (and I had more room...), I'd be all over it... I really want a square-tail GT6 some day... :frown:

Without seeing the body, it's hard to say if $1500 is too much. At the same time, $500 for a running car sounds cheap regardless of body condition. Again... I really wish I had more room... :frown:

My second car was a GT6 MK3. It was my sole transport and a daily driver for about 8 years. By the time I sold it (for $250) it was so rusty there really wasn't much left of the body from the waist down.
