Rolls Healey listed on Ebay

I'd be surprised if the "reserve" is met, whatever it is. Since this is such a rare and unique car, I could see this as a test auction to see what the market looks like. A very odd and public test, but a test nonetheless. A vehicle like this should be one of the marquee vehicles at one of the big auction houses. There you get many qualified bidders that have a solid idea of the car's history. The hype wouldn't hurt its return either. I could be wrong (probably am), and since it's late, I might not make much sense (not suprising). Regardless, I would rather see this one roll across a true auction block.

Obviously little-to-no real effort was put into that eBay listing. Either the seller figures that anyone interested in the car will already know about and he doesn't need to hype it, or he is, as you say, just testing the waters and didn't want to put in the effort.

A car such as this one, which is so rare that you cannot assign a "market value" to it, makes for interesting viewing at auction.

Now at $300,100 and still the reserve isn't broken....

My initial guess was in the high $500's, especially with the value of the dollar being so low. That being the case, I don't see this car being on U.S. soil after it's sold.

Oh, were you bidding on the Rolls Royce Healey TR3 MG spark plug wire as well? :jester:

Looks like someone was creeping up to $350,000 but got scared to spend the extra penny. Not that 350 would have gotten it anyway.
IMO, I think it would do really well at one of the RM auctions or maybe even a Kruse auction in the US. But if it were me, I would send it over to H&H or Bonhams in the UK. Their results are tremendous.

Alan tells me that he is re-listing in with no reserve. Now THIS should get interesting!

 WOW!!! This could be one of the best buys we've seen in a long time, unless he has a 100S lurking around somewhere that he would like to ebay off...

Did he say why he is selling? Does this mean the museum is on 'hold' indefinitely?
Inquiring minds want to know B-)

YEP...NO RESERVE>>> OH after $350,000 minimum bid

in other words a "RESERVE " auction

All very interesting! The Rolls Healey is indeed a special car, I have seen two of them and even rode in one! I was visiting Melbourne in 1977 and was billeted at the home of a fellow Healey enthusiast in Toorak. He owned one of these cars at the time and a journalist from the local magazine, "Racing Car News" was coming over to do a story on the car. We all jumped in for a "spin around the block". The story appeared in the October 1977 edition.
I recall that the Rolls Healey was quick, silent and very smooth. The extra width felt a bit strange as it still had normal BJ8 seats, there was a lot of air between them.
I also viewed the green Rolls Healey in England in 1978 but it was still undergoing restoration at the time. All three cars are different from each other. The red one in Australia had a Jaguar transmission and MGC axle. The green one is automatic and has a different bonnet bulge. I thought the white one was also an auto but the e-bay ads say it is a 4-speed.
The motor is interesting as it has that curiosity, overhead inlet valves & side exhaust valves. It is so long that there seemed to be enough space between the SUs for a third carburettor.

Less than a day left, no bids at $350,000, with a "Buy It Now" price of $500,000. Makes you wonder how serious the $349,999.99 bid was...
