IMHO, I think Don Elliot's experience is anecdotal evidence that it is not generally needed.
"If you are touring at normal speeds, stay with the original oil feed to the rockers. I've done 174,000 miles on my rocker shaft, cam shaft etc. with no problems. In the past 16 summers, I've driven 94,000 miles and had no problems.

As I posted, I found I was consuming oil excessively (about one quart every 300 miles) through oil leaking into the cylinders via the valve and leakage. Since my engine is rarely above 3000 RPM for an extended period, I decided I to go back to the "original" oil system.
Now if you have a high reving engine and always drive your car vigorously or race it, you may need want this accessory.
If the top end is questionable, your money may be better spent making it sound.
