In my generation, which is just slightly behind Mick's. a SO is a person you live with and is not married to.
Anyone who has had a sibling with one knows this is the best way to describe this person.
I guess it also has more significance in the liberal west versus the conservative south.
Has got to be more significant number of non married couples in the west v the South
LOL, " a sibling with one", In my case a cousin. It meant the same thing here. Yes, you are correct, or at least were. It would seem someone got liberal with the current definition.
"Significant other (abbreviated SO) is colloquially used as a gender-neutral term for a person's partner in an intimate relationship[1] without disclosing or presuming anything about marital status, relationship status, or sexual orientation. Synonyms with similar properties include sweetheart, better half, spouse, domestic partner, lover, soulmate, or life partner."
Seems with legalization, the term is no longer exclusive. As far as the south being conservative, you couldn't be further from the truth. Unless someone lives here, all a fella knows is what the media tells them. The reason you hear squalking from folks is because the school system became over run by people with an agenda and abused their positions to indoctrinate other people children. Basically, the kids weren't given a choice by the system, either believe exactly what we teach you or be labeled and expelled. I by no means with to open a political discussion, I'm just saying, it aint what you think it is down here.
