This is probably a stupid question but what is the best grade and weight of oil to use in these 4 cylinder motors? Are you guys using synthetic oil?

I've been using 20/50 weight Valvoline VR1 which is a racing oil with added Zinc (for lubrication). You might also add a little Marvel Mystery Oil. I would not use Synthetic oil since the engine tolerance is not as precise as a modern engine.

2nd that on the oil with Zinc. I recently pulled the head off my Cooper S and was able to check the buckets and checked camshaft spec. with a dial indicator. I had no discernible wear on the original factory hardened camshaft/buckets which was a pleasant surprise!

Mobile one 5W-30...But then I built a very tight motor to go along with thinner oil.

Another vote here for Valvolene VR-1. 20/50.
Been using it for several years and very happy.
I would not suggest the synthetic. Might find even
more spots under your car ( just marking their territory!).

+1 on the 20W50 VR1 Racing oil. A little harder to get these days at your local auto parts store, but available at Grainger of all places!
