Replacing Trans. Gaskets and Seals

As part of replacing the clutch, I've decided to replace all the gaskets, switches and seals. Everything was going well until last night. I couldn't get the rear main housing that encloses the mainshaft to separate from the bell housing to replace the gasket. It will only come away about a half inch. Tried the shock and awe method via standing the trans on the bell housing and striking the main shaft with a hammer while a friend pulled on the main shaft housing. Didn't help.

Is there a clip or something beyond the bolts that is keeping this thing from coming apart?? Has anyone else had this problem?? According to my Bently manual it should come apart with just removing the bolts.

Any help would be appreciated.

Did you remove the speedo drive gear & it's housing ?

Check for any burrs on the shaft where it has to pull through the rear bearing ? (I assume of course you've already removed the rear drive flange.)

Mine have always required some persuasion, but only a bit. Some people have made pullers, though. Let me know if you'd like a sample photo.

Thanks Randall, but all my persuasion couldn't convince the two to separarte and rather than risk breaking something I used a silicone gasket sealer in place of the paper gasket and put it back together. Time will tell if the silicone holds up. Oh, and yes I did remove the speedo housing.
