removing exhaust/intake manifold

I know this has probably been asked before but how do you get to the two bolts in between the exhaust and intake manifold on a 1500 motor. I have tried everything I can think of. I can get a wrench on the rear bolt but I cannot get anything on the front bolt. There has to be a way to get to it but I can't figure it out. Help!!

PO made a tool out of a box end wrench cut out on one side and bent around a bit.

I took mine off yesterday and the tool didn't work so I took the WIDEST 9/16 combination wrench and put the open end straight on the nut (like it's eating it from the front) Then I put a screwdriver in the box end and used that to turn the wrench. Use a wrench that has a wide box end. I have a DGV and it's a pain to get to but that'll work.

Get a S box wrench. It is shaped like a S and it works. I just put my manifolds on and I was able to do it with this special wrench. No way to torque the nuts properly, but getting them "real tight" will work.

Another reported method was to get a "coupling nut" and use it rather than the standard exhaust/intake nut. The extra length of the nut would give you more room to get a wrench on it. I decided to go the S wrench way because a coupling nut of the correct size would cost almost the same as an S wrench set on EBay and the wrench set could be used again.............although this is the first time in 40 years that I have had to use a S wrench. However, I just started working on British cars!!

My 1500 had a major vacuum because the DPO decided to leave that manifold nut off. The stock nuts on the two lower center studs should be long like a coupling nut.

For 1500 engine parts like this I have found that Sprtbits in California has the best price and carries stuff that Moss and VB don't. NFI

I'm thinking about changing it out to an allen and using a ball end wrench.
