Refector that lights up for stop and turn

64 BJ8. I’ve modified my rear reflector to light up when braking and turning. I added a 10 watt halogen bulb to each refector. The bulb has two wires that need to tap into each tail light. What two color wires on the left and what two color wires on the right should I tap into? It should light up when stopping and turning. Thank you, Roger

er, Roger /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Why not just look in your Shop Service Manual at the electic schmatic for the wire colour codes /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Many take this opportunity to place about a 15amp fuse in the red circuit. Feeds lights and licence lights. refer to the wiring diagram in your manual.

As you have probably noticed by now, your car does not match the wiring diagram on the knowledge base. The diagram on the kb is for late BJ8s. Yours is early BJ8 without the split parking/turn signals. If you have the last version of the shop manual, the one labeled " early cars " should match your 64.
On the driver's side, connect one wire to the white/purple. On the passenger's side, connect one wire to the white/brown. Take the 2nd wire from each halogen
and ground it under the nut that holds the stop/turn signal assembly assembly onto the body. There is probably one there already from the assembly. Use a star washer between the body and the lugs on the ground wire(s)to maintain a good ground.

Thanks everyone. You are so correct Ed. I can't follow the diagram exactly because I don't have separate parking/turn.

You explained how to splice them in perfectly. The tip about the star washer is great. Right on. Thank you. Roger

Just added the same modification to my BN7 with conical reflectors. I used the kit from Hendrix wire wheel and am very pleased with the results. Both lights work great and installation couldn't have been more simple. The kit had "Bulbrite XP, dichroic halogen lamp" with a 12V 5W rating. No sign of overheating or any other electrical problem.
Good luck, I think all Healey's that are driven should have this modification. It looks better than a third brake light, plus works with the turn signals as well.
Just my HO.

I have been researching halogen and led replacement bulbs for 1157 sockets. I also have been looking at the wireless 3rd brake lights used by motorcyclists. Anyone tried these wireless systems out? I am looking for a socket that would work better than the Hendrix conversion. Those little sockets seem pretty fragile.

Darn!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif You are making me feel bad. How about a wiring diagram for late model 3000's MKIII? I am still in the teardown stage but some day, I hope, I will need one.

Hello 12Many,
The nice color wiring diagram in this forum's knowledge base should match all 3000s mid 65 and on. If your car has the seperate turn signal and parking lights then you can use the one in the KB. If you don't have a shop manual, you should buy one. The last manual has both wiring diagrams in it. Good luck with your project ! This is the place to come for advice from those who have done it.

Bighly,
Those sockets should last forever. The bulbs should last 2000 hours of use. If you made something more substantial, then you would have to support it somehow or it might fall loose under it's own weight. The industry uses for those kind of sockets. Not to worry.

Qustions For Johnny BN7

1. What is the ref number of the kit from Hendrix Wire Wheel?

2. Conical reflectors - These are 100-Six features, is your car a very early BN7 as these reflectors carried over to the early 3000s. If your car was a very, very early model it may even have been badged as a 100-Six. Just interested. Thanks

By fragile I suppose you mean "breakable". I've had lots of problems with the brand new sockets holding the 1157 bulbs. The ceramic one's from Hendrix seem much more reliable and they produce a much brighter light. I've seen all kinds of third light kits installed in Healey's, none I care to use.

Here is what I thought the conversion was based upon. Perhaps I am mistaken. conversion link

Now I see what you are worried about. Those connectors in that link are a disaster. Don't even try using them. Buy some of those ceramic connectors. You can find em online for less than 2 dollars each. From the picture of the Hendrix kit, they are including those good ceramic connectors. I originally tried using some of those as seen in the link and broke off one of the pins from the 5 dollar halogen bulb. If you search the forum you will find a post from Dave that links to an online company that sells those ceramic sockets.

Tracy, I have an early BJ8 and I think this will work on my car although it is not included in the head line. What do you think. Has anyone here done this?

I have an early 65 BJ8, a few 100 before they made the change to seperate turn signal and parking lights. As long as your car uses those type of reflectors, the kit will work.

While we are on this subject;
If your turn signals flash too slow after adding the extra halogen bulbs, a new OEM flasher may correct the problem. But a Stant-550 flasher works great with or without the extra load.
On a BJ8 you will have to make a way to mount it with a cable clamp as there is no mounting hole built into the can like on the Lucas flasher for a BJ8.

Yes, my car is an early BN7 mfg in November 1959 and sold as a 1960 model AH 3000. It did have conical reflectors installed, but no 100/6 badges.
You can go to the Hendrix wire wheel website for information. Just click on "cool stuff" for part numbers etc. Since my reflectors were new they just sold me the wiring kit. It included instructions on how to install in conical's. If memory serves the kit with new reflectors included was $110 + shipping. The wiring kit alone was $59 + shipping.
Good luck
