Rebound strap stud

Just installed new rear springs on my 70 B. This was my first effort at any replacement type work on the car.Went well except the nut was frozen on the rebound strap stud and, you guessed it, I broke it off. Has anyone tried anything other than welding a new stud to the axle housing? Could stud be drilled out and then tapped for a bolt? Is the rebound strap a must? Thanks for any advice
 
It would be better to weld one on, but a bolt thru will work!! If you don't have a welder, that is the best option!! Have fun!!
 
from what i understand, the rebound strap limits movement/travel of the suspension, thereby improving handling and minimizing body roll. i guess its something you shouldnt remove.

The rebound strap also protects the brake line from taking up weight when the rear is jacked up, like changing a rear tire.You could probably loop it back up to the underbody if attaching it to the axle is a problem. I mean, "Why not?"
