rearended !!!!!!!!

I've posted this before but I'll mention it again -- it is real easy to add a third, high-mounted brake light that can be used when driving in traffic:

Not a protection against the truly distracted or incompetent driver but just one more chance to be noticed in time.

This is half a pair of magnetic-base towing lights. This one came from Wal-Mart though I have recently seen them at Harbor Freight for about 10 bucks.

This will be on the back of mine. I'm starting to rethink about using my original seats also. NewmexTR3 how do those Clubman seats of yours fit? I see they are 19.5 in wide and I can only find about 18in in the floor of my TR3a.

Ditto on all the "that looks awful," "feel your pain," and "glad you're OK."

Double ditto on wave all your receipts and documentation at the insurance adjuster. Yes: The car is 50 years old. NO! It is NOT depreciated!

I feel very sorry for you Dan. What a nightmare. I hope that things go well for you with the insurance/rebuild. It is obvious from the pictures that the car was in great condition before the accident, so you have a very good case if the insurance companies try it on.
Good luck. Keep us up to date and remember we are all here to support you.

Thank you for all your support guys! My stomach is still in a knot, but getting better.
The insurance adjuster should be coming out tomorrow to see the car. I will have a pile of recipets and a photo album of the restoration. If any body has ads for comparison values that you might think would be helpful I would really apperciate if you could forward it to me.
As my awesome Wife said "We learned some valuble insight on the car,(during the restore) now we will rebuild it even better"
Dan

What a complete bummer. The car does have book value and yours looks to be at the top. I had not looked at NADA in years...every Triumph owner should check it out...in this economy no less.
Your lucky in many ways, think if you had it out in runner shape... Glad that four legged dude wasn't with you.

Aloha Dan,

Glad you are fine and sorry about your car. I had a similar experience a about four years ago, a Toyota pick up truck collided with my TR3A and crumpled the right front fender, front cowl and grille but damage was limited to sheet metal.

I had the car towed to a collision repair shop recommended by my insurance company. At first they were not that interested in doing the repairs. They were concerned that getting replacement body panels would be a problem, but I told them I had source and provided them with both Moss Motors and TRF catalogs. They only wanted to deal with new body panels, not used panels. When they confirmed they could get new parts they took on the job. My insurance company paid over $7000 for the repair.

It seems in my area most body shops are set up to deal with insurance paid repairs. These are most likely a remove damage panels and replace with new panels type jobs. Hopefully you have shops in your area that can do your repairs.

If your car is totaled by the insurance company, you can probably buy the car back a small salvage cost. Unfortunately then you need to pay for the repairs out of the "totaled" pay out.

Good luck with you car and hope you have no long term injuries.

I hope you have some better luck with the insurance than you had with the car. Your car looked to be done to a very high standard. From the damage in the photos it looks like it will be hard to get to where it was. I hope you had a stated value on your insurance policy because you will most likely get a bunch of BS from their insurance company. I think I would demand a new body shell. I think you can get them, but I may be wrong. I also would not have problem with a sore neck to help the cause. You may still get one because your car had no headrests. Don't sign any release until you speek to someone, at least your doctor. Somebody I know here was just t boned in his TR6 and their insurance says it was 40% his fault because he was there. This not a time to be nice. I do hope you the best of luck with everything. When I see this posting I keep thinking of your post with you and your friend with the goggles on and the smiles. Would love to see those smiles again.

By the way ,don't mention that trip to the insurance co.

I was t-boned many years ago and walked away from a totaled Cherokee. I signed the release. A couple of years later I started having neck problems (related to the wreck) and have C4-C5 spinal injury and spurs which cause swelling and constant headaches. It's been over 20 years and I still suffer. Sometimes the headaches last a week at a time. The neurosurgeon said to avoid surgery if at all possible so I live with it, and it sucks. Don't sign the release, please. These things can surface later.

Visit your Doc, get some X-rays to check your spine alignment as well as for any small fractures. Especially look at the curvature of the spine through your neck (yes its supposed to curve). Maybe even have your Doc rccomend a GOOD Chiropractor to check for soft tissue damage that he may miss. At least have a GOOD Chiropractor check the X-rays.

I was rear ended 4 years ago by someone not paying attention. I was in my Bronco II, he was in a Jeep Wrangler. He hit me while I was stopped at a red light (he also missed that the lilght was red), rear ended me at over 40mph. Luckily I had no broken bones, I was just sore. I went to the emergency room where the ER Doc diagnosed a back sprain (the insurance companies best friend that Doc). Though he did say that if I still hurt in a week to see my reglar Doc. I still hurt so I did visit my GP and he ordered X-rays. The good news was no fractures. The bad news was that my entire spine was out of place. From the Sacrum to the base of my Skull. He recommended a Chiro, backed up by some of my own research, and it has made all the difference. I do have a permanent back injury but I have come a very long way in the last four years. My Chiro and Neuro-Muscular massage therapy has dropped from 2-3 times a week to once every 4-6 weeks.

The opposing insurance company insisted that we use the ER Docs diagnosis. The ER Doc talked to me, looked specifically for bruising and nothing else and then left. The ER Doc saw me for two minutes (no exaggeration). I had multiple witnesses to that and the opposing insurnace company soon backed off wanting to only use that diagnosis.

I was barely able to get the opposing insurance company to cover my medical bills but they did (just). My Bronco II was totaled, which is how I picked up my TR8. The TR8 is very comfortable and does not casue my back to act up. My TR6 though... I have to "recover" from every drive for a few days before I can get back in it. Which really REALLY sucks.

My current "treatments" are considered "maintenance" and are not covered by Insurance.

Bottom line, get yourself checked out beyond your own satisfaction. PeterK's and my situations are not fun. Do your best to avoid it.

For prevention, we have a Back-Off XP on the 3A https://www.signaldynamics.com/products/BLSM/blsm.asp unit wired in to our brake and 3rd LED brake lights. I've posted this before and it REALLY does work. Studies have shown that flashing your brake lights increases visibility and awareness.

This unit was inexpensive, very simple to connect and gives peace of mind. It has two modes that work independently so 1) our brake lights flash then stay on while 2) our LED 3rd light continues to flash then steady then repeats as long as my foot in on the pedal. 3) A switched 12V source to the yellow wire gives you a steady flash of all brake lights useful for side of the road repairs.

NFI, but I wouldn't have a small car without this.

Thank you Guys for all the information and support!
Went to a good Doc yesterday he did a very intensive exam andf took about 7 or eight x-rays I am going back tomorrow am to see the results. Today I am feeling a bit sore around the neck area. I am doing "light duty" work. A little tuff for a Sheet Metal Worker. I have decided with my Wife that we will rebuild the car that got crunched maybe with a donor body, I don't know what the Ins is doing yet but I will get what is fair I.E. what I think is fair! Again thank you all for the support and good feed back. I will keep you all in formed as things progress.

Dan,
Glad you weren't hurt. A car can always be repaired.

I live in the Bay Area and would recommend that if you need referals for local body shops etc, try the Triumph Travelers. They are a local Triumph club and have a web site. A really nice bunch of car nuts. The parts you will need are probably available locally through club members.

Dan, just checked in-ditto on the best wishes and condolences and triple ditto on signing any releases. I can't imagine how I'd feel, but crying seems logical.
Mike
