TR2/3/3A rear shelf differential dome

Hello TR3 guys..I am working on the rear shelf of my TR3-a. Have any of you fabricated the differential dome? I have been trying to use the old shelf as a pattern and it's driving me crazy. My brother was a metal fabricator. He's talking about pi times this and dividing by that. There must be an easier way. I saw something in the Roger Williams book but there's little detail. A layout would be great. Advise would be great. Thanks in advance

Make a card pattern of the part. That is how I do parts that are not flat. Easier to try different shapes to get that dome piece.

Not as rounded but shows the idea.

worse comes to worse....I have a dome that I can cut out of a parts car....probably cheaper to make on then what it would cost for me to send it to you though

If you need me to measure something specific, or photos let me know please. I have it on my workbench at the moment....

cheers

John, Nice work to say the least but are we missing a few pictures between the first and second above? Is that a patch in the forward part of the bubble?

The bubble itself is not hard to make on a hollow stump. The motorcycle guys do it on gas tanks. The hard part is getting it smooth (planished) after you get the shape in it.

Why didn't I think of that..thank you. I made a piece in under an hour that took me I don't know how long to make the mate. I have quit keeping track of time.

Thanks very much for the offer, tush. I put one together using Davids' paper pattern method. Came out pretty good. I thought I would cut the hole undersize and bend up the excess for a mounting flange..then the stiffeners I made..then..then. Are those your videos on the net. If so..thanks for that. I have watched a lot of them.

His videos are what gave me the confidence to take the plunge with this project. This Forum has helped keep me on course.

Yes, they are and thanks for watching. As David says, it's a great community effort here from a great bunch of guys. I've had to ask many questions along the way myself and pretty much learn something new every day!

Good luck with your project. Be sure to keep us updated. We would love to hear more about it!

Cheers
