Rear Shackle Plate Pins

Hello,
1966 Sprite Mk 3
Decided to do the easy part of my suspension rebuild. Nothing is ever easy on this thing. After fighting with it most of the day I now have the leaf springs out. All I want to do is replace the bushings; some of the bushing are very worn. I have broken off the bolts on the rear shackles. I found two shackles in my parts box; the problem is they are smaller. The distance between shackle pins is 1-½ inches. The broken shackle pin distance is 2-½ inches.
Could someone please measure the distance between the shackle pins? I would love to put this thing back together tomorrow. If I need to order parts it will be a week or so before I can finish the job.
Thanks Phil

A MIG welder is invaluable for removing broken bolt ends from various mechanical components, like shackles. In worst case one could also use alternative heat sources like a welding torch, propane torch, stovetop - (nah not really), but get it hot and the bolt comes out. Using a MIG also gives you something to grab onto with the Vise-Grip.

Just measured mine on my 1966 and they are 2-1/2 inches.

Cheers

Thanks, for the posts. I used a tourch on one shackle, it was so rusty, still snaped off.
I wonder what the small shackles are for? I have only ownwed a sprite parts car and a couple of midgets over the last 31 years. Anybody find alternative shackles at a local parts store, or do I need to order from my Local Moss guy.
Thank you Mark for measuring, guess I will do some yard work today.

I put in new plates and bolts from VB, received in a couple days and they fit right into place. Overall not very expensive.

Hello,

It is not the money that I am concerned about. This is my LBC nothing is to good. It is the waiting for parts to Canada. I was lucky today my local parts store had old stock sitting on his shelf. He does not normally carry stock for Sprites; there were two shackles for my car. For anyone in the area I deal with Fred @ British Auto Sport only 20 mins from my house. He always gives me great service and is as honest as they come can order anything you need. So just maybe tonight I can start to assemble everything.
Cheers Phil

Parts on the shelf, priceless.

That's why it good to have Emails and phone numbers of people with the same car say within a 1 1/2 hour from home. You can swap parts, borrow parts, buy parts what every it takes to get back on the road fast.

If you every need a part and I have one you are welcome to it.

Cheers

Mark

:iagree: same here in the other direction

must send you both my phone and email.
thanks Phil

Phil, there are a few Moss / VB dealers here in Canada (I'm in Ottawa). I use Pièces Robert in Montreal, JP can probably suggest a few options further West...

Duncan - Phil uses Fred in Dundas (as do I) nice and close and a lot in stock. I know Mark uses Tony and has it shipped. (which I would too if I could get my act together) there are some others around as well.

I have the same problem, Tony would be great, but I always seem to be in a hurry for parts. Fred is quick and great to deal with, never a problem, and so close.
Phil
