rear main seal kit 833-145

Hi (also sent to Healey email list...)

I emailed the list back in the fall about a problem I had with my clutch. Since that time I've taken out the gearbox and the clutch disk shows signs of oil contamination. A couple of days ago I just ordered parts from Moss, one being the rear main seal kit 833-145. When I got my order confirmation this part was not listed (no backorder, just said "0"). So I just gave them a call and they told me they are having technical difficulty with this part and it is no longer available (yikes!). They said it might be available again in the future but no timing on that right now. Long story short, it is starting to get nice in Michigan and I'd like to see if I can get this car back on the road. Are there any other vendors I can get this part from and be confident it will work?? Anybody with good experiences please let me know.

Thanks,
Justin

I believe BCS has the DWR style rear seal, not the same as the Moss seal:
https://www.britishcarspecialists.com/

You can see the seal here:
https://www.bighealey.co.uk/section.php?id=4&page=4

Usually rear main leakage is diverted from the clutch by the flywheel. If the drain is open in the bottom of the flywheel housing, any leakage usually drains out without getting into the clutch.

Leakage from the front of the transmission is another matter & if bad enough, could soak the clutch.

Did they say what the problem was with the seal? I just bought one in Stockton from British Car Specialists 209 948 1030 and installed it. I agree with Daves remarks as I had a bunch of oil comming from the crank. Since the gear box was low on oil and since the car was new to me, I also installed a front gearbox seal. I had a ton of oil comming from the crank, through the vent Dave refrenced. The point of all this is that the crank oil leak (big as it was) had no effect on the clutch surface. My guess is that the gearbox seal might be causing your clutch problems. Installing the crank seal is interesting. I suggest you drill&tap into the block and bearing cap deeper than the 10mm suggested. I had to machine down the bolts or could have used a bottom tap for enough thread travel to pull-up the seal houseing tight enough to the block.

I can not Identify the source vendor for that seal on E-bay from the picture and it does not include a "Buy Now Price". However, the seller is a well known Healey restoration / parts supplier here in the US.---Keoke

The person at Moss I spoke to didn't offer much detail as to why they aren't selling this kit anymore, just that there are "technical problems" with the part. I plan to also change the seal at the front of the gearbox.

spartan, one difference between the dennis welch seal and the others is that a bit more material from the engine back plate must be removed for the d.w. one to fit. otherwise there much the same./bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

While we are on the subject of seals, my early side shift gearbox, BN2, 4 speed, does not have a front seal. Does anyone know of a front seal conversion for this gearbox? Thanks,
D

Hi Dave, I do not know the source of the seal. But someone has that front assembly either recast or remachined to take a seal. Maybe some others on the forum have installed one. There was an article in one of the Healey Magazines several years ago showing the new part and defining its source or method of modification. You might give Knock a call he may know how it is achieved.---Fwiw--Keoke-?
