Rear hubs... new or rebuild?

I doubt it Scott; besides this tool is a piece of work. It must weigh at least 35-40 pounds. That's a lot of shipping costs.

Elliot I'll second the question, do you know who made the bearings? Somebody in our local club has the tool to take the hub apart. I was thinking about rebuilding one of the extra sets that I have this summer. If all the bearings you can get are Import junk now, no need to. Does anybody have the correct Timken #s for the bearings. I won't rebuild them until I have the correct bearings.

Keith-
Here's the bearing info that came right out of the "Six-Tech" TR6 service manual. You can download a copy of this manual by going to Bobby D's or Paul Regos websites.

Elliot thanks for the information.

I remember when we rebuilt mine about 25 years ago, we just took the old bearings to Bearings, Inc. and matched them up. Same with the seals. They were standard sizes. We had to reuse the crush sleeve, so it was carefully straightened using a panel hammer on the outside with a piece of round stock inside. We made up a special tool, which I still have, but I don't remember exactly how it was used.

How long will TRF take to rebuild your hubs, or do they have them on the shelf? Do you need to send in your cores?

TRF quoted me 4 week turn-around if they rebuild mine for $299.
Off the shelf is still $299 with a $200 core charge. Once they inspect mine and deem it is rebuildable, they say they will refund my $200.
To me it makes no sense to spend $299 with TRF when I can buy new and improved hubs for $50 more from GP... to me its a no brainer.

Tom at TRF's C.A.R. components just rebuilt a pair for me in just one week (two week quote). Also, don't forget TRF's hubs come with a new u-joint so that's $80 more per side for GP.

I just got done installing one of the GP hubs. I moved my u-joints since they are new so total cost was $349. To me the additional $50 ($299 vs. $349) is well spent since in my oppinion the GP hub has a beefer ball bearing. In any case, new u-joints only cost $28 each.
