Rear Axle -what a mess & of course a question

Well, 20 deg. C today (70 F) and I spent my lunch hour washing the rear springs/ axle/ tranny. The rear axle is far and away the dirtiest part of the whole car, the oil/dirt is absolutely caked. Actually there seems to be so much that it dissolved the paint underneath. As I clean it is coming up cast not black.

Anyway, here is my question, since there is no oil anywhere else (and I know LBC's need to mark their territory etc. etc.) Any likely culprits as to where the oil was coming from? It seemed heavier on the vent side - could it be coming from there? I really don't want this kind of drippage when it is going again. It is centred on the pumpkin and extends from the u-joint back. There is also a band on the bottom of the car above- mostly towards the front of the axle.

Any ideas?

Imagine the usual tablespoon of engine oil that leaks from the rear main "seal", blown back from its point of origin. It hits the pumpkin and the area just ahead of it nicely. When you solve the rear main "seepage" issue, the diff stays much cleaner.

Check the pinion seal, if oil is caked up around the nose, the seal leaks. If you have it out, put a new seal in it regardless.

I would sure check that front seal, particularly with the muck slung up onto the body.

Just to be clear in my mind, we are talking about the likely culprit being Moss part 120-800 rather than 294-210 or 267-040?

It is also the same as a 70 Ford rear axle seal available just about anywhere. Any REAL autoparts store with somebody who knows what parts are, not some dumb kid without a clue, can look it up. It is listed in the books maybe not the computer under MG and/or Morris Minor pinion seal.
Same as a Ford

While we're on the subject, when I reassemble, (I have new bushings also) do I grease the bolts at all as they go through the bushings? do I treat the bushings in any way? lube? glue them in?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
