I can't think of any reason to replace the dust cover, unless it somehow gets damaged in the process, which is not likely. If it got bent enough to scrape on the housing, it could be easily straightened.

stinky, i used a full 1/4" mild steel,i bought a spare nut from a local vender to use as a template and in the event i buggered up the one that was on the car id have it on hand, the wrench worked so well i was later able to return the nut to the vender $32.00- the reason i used a full 1/4" was so i could make a relief on one side to get it to fit nice and snug to the axle see attc.after tracing the nut onto the metal i drilled holes all around the perimiter just inside the the trace lines then used a dremel with carbide diskes to cut through (use eye protection) then hand filled to exact size, heated with torch till almost a red glow and dropped it into a metal bucket containing cold water in an attemt to temper the metal, it sounds and is labor intensive but i just wanted to do it and ill always have it to remind me of my dear friend keoke. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This is a job I just did up at Bill Bolton's. The tools required include the wrench (Here is one on eBay 130042445374) an axle puller and a press to remove and install the seal.
While your in there you will replace the seal, o-rings and the paper gasket. Chances are the bearings are fine. You may want some nut locks (the flat retainers you bend over) but I was able to reuse mine, and maybe the nuts themselves.
Consider replacing the self locking nuts on the splined hubs as you cannot reuse these too many times.
Getting the big axle nuts off require sharp blows with a hammer and it was halpful to have someone hold the tool while I pounded away. Extracting the shafts was done with the axle puller and made the job easy.
Some times even when you replace the seals they still leak and need to be redone.
While you are doing this job (as long as your in there) consider doing any pumpkin work required. There is a seal there that Dave Russell was talking about.

stinky, i may have mentioned this before, the left/drivers side rear axle nut spins clockwise to remove - the right/passengers side nut spins counter clockwise to remove, i agree with bighly with the exception of having two heads,four hands, and at least two feet in there while flailing away inside the fender well with a lump hammer.if the wrench fits properly one person can do this,i took the precaution of taping a moving blanket over the fender. good luck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif

Thanks, Anthony , I been away for awhile, so I'm trying to catch up on everything. I'm going to make that wrench.the way to temper it would be like you did, except for water use the cheapest motor oil you can find ,let it sit in there till its allcool tothe touch don,t worry bout keoke he a puddy cat /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

At the risk of starting this up all over again, am I mistaken that it requires 150lb of torque to do both the axle nuts and the nut on the drive to the rear axle? I'm getting a klunk noise and I didn't get that much torque when I replaced the seal on axle nut a year ago. I'm replacing the hub on that wheel and figured to re torque it at that time.
