TR5/TR250 Really silly TR-250 Trunk seal question

Ok, please forgive me for this one, but I just don't know the answer, and I'm the fourth owner of my otherewise generally original car. Does anyone happen to know whether the rubber boot seal goes on the boot lid or on the body itself? *blush*

Thanks!

My TR3 and 6 both are at the body. I'm certain this was kept consistent down the line.

Body for sure, same as a TR4/4a seal.

Hi Bill,

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif I concur. The seal goes onto the body itself, glued to the flange that surrounds the trunk (boot) opening.

No need to blush either. There are no "dumb" questions. We've all "been there, done that" and asked our share (and continue to do so!).

Often, "dumb" is *not* asking questions, which eventually leads to doing the job all over again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

What would be embarassing is to guess at how the seal installs, put it in wrong, then proudly pop open the trunk at the next British Car show! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I know that feeling well! You can't get the hood or trunk closed fast enough as a crowd that only a politician would love, forms rapidly around your masterpiece. Just about that time, the club nerd with his "new" digital camera shows up to take shots of cars for the local club newsletter.

Been there, done that! Now I ask first, display later.

When I did mine I found it took a powerful glue to keep it from pulling loose. Weatherstrip cement wouldn't hold it. In the end I used the Elmers equivalent of 'Gorilla Glue'.

I'm using TRF seals on my TR4, which work well but are also coming loose on the curves where the trunk bends down towards the bumper. Will need to try the Gorilla Glue trick Geo used.

The key to the Gorilla Glue is to get both surfaces wet (with water). Seems silly to wet metal but apparently that is what the stuff needs. Excess will foam out (the glue expands as it gets wet) and should be cleaned off promptly.

Ya gotta glue the TR6 trunk seal. If you don't, in six months the rubber seal will shrink and there will be a 2" gap where the ends meet. Gluing will prevent this. I just use 3M weather strip adhesive, black.

One of the best adhesives I have used is Marine Goop, avail at Home Depot, the stuff is tough & it stays somewhat flexible, so it doesn't shear, gives it more strenght.
