TR4/4A Radiator Fan and plates spanning bolts

Hi,

I am putting the after market fan back on the engine of my 1965 TR4 and there are two plates with holes that go over each set of bolts.
One is flat and the other is curved. I am not sure if the curved one should be hammered flat or is it curved for a purpose. It does not fit over both bolts in this curved state. The curved bend looks intentional. I do not even know what their purpose is.
Photos attached. I have owned the car for about 6 years and they have always been on there, however I never noticed them until now. The only thing that it reminds me of is in the electrical field where they need to be connected to complete a circuit. Thanks

I just found out they are a sort of lock washer, they get bent up against the nut to keep them from coming loose. Those crazy Brits!

If it helps, Here’s what I had on my TR3 before replacing with the Mark Macy fan.

You will notice Kevin has the fan mounted backwards which you have to do on the TR3 to have clearance for the radiator. There is not very much clearance on the cross brace on the TR3 but it does fit.
Not sure about the TR4 setup.

I omitted the plates and used Blue Loctite on the bolts. Much simpler, especially if installing the fan w/o removing the radiator. Has held fine for many miles and years.

Not sure what was going on here but this is what I found on the fan hub on the TR3 I am getting running again for the owner, Note the lose bolt with the turned over tab. Two of the bolts were like that.
