Racing a Porsche

Met my son today at a cool racetrack outside of Napoleonville, LA. No Problem Raceway www.noproblemraceway.com where the Porsche club of New Orleans met for a Sunday of casual "racing," no true competition, just 20 cars at a time motoring at high speed, passing on a gentlemanly basis. My son got to drive one of the Porsche 928 club cars, a real beater but nicely prepared. He got ten minutes or so on the track, racing against some seriously prepared cars and some not so seriously prepared cars. It took ten minutes for him to wipe the smile off his face. The whole crew, maybe 50 people and 30 cars, were really nice people.

On a weirder note, a retired professional football player showed up with his family driving three cars he had just bought. A new Ferrari convertible (no license plate yet), a new Maserati limited edition coupe (again, no plates) and his new S65 AMG Mercedes (had plates). I wonder how long he will hold on to his monies.

Great when that happens......

I love going to "track days" in my street Miata (even though I have a dedicated race car). They are always great fun and very low-key.

In our area, we call them "time trials", with passing only allowed on straghtaways and only with a "point by".

And you do sometimes see interesting people at them. We had a guy with a real American LeMans race car at one of our track days. Another time, Robin Quivers (Howard Stern's sidekick) showed up at one I was running at Pocono.

My Good friend is jumpin in his shoes waiting for the PCA to start up again at Summit Point.
In Feb. he showed me an in car video and he was reachin speeds of 130-140 by the end of the front straight.
Pretty cool.

The two guys on the left are track day instructors (as well as father and son). The elder is one of my few actual lifetime friends. Sebring in background.

I know a guy w/ a GT3 cup car and every ( and I do mean EVERY) time he takes it out something terrible happens to it. Time before last it blew the engine (@ Sebring in Feb). Next time out w/ it's fresh motor it got stuffed into the wall back'ards. This of course was two trips after the trans went out....

Yeah, "stuff happens".

This put that white car on th' trailer early, a magnesium case mill, too.
