Quick tachometer wiring question on a '65

When I purchased the car I had no working instruments -- the correct tach, a RVI2401, came with the car but it wasn't hooked up. I've since found an induction loop from a "parts" tach, but I think I might still be missing a piece. I believe there is a metal piece that's supposed to go underneath the plastic induction block?

If so, does anyone have a picture of this piece?

This is from a 3" (later model) RVI tach but should give you the idea

I am fairly certain that the clip shown in the pictures is primarily for mechanical support. If you don't have that part I am sure you can make one from scratch using sheet steel... which you probably already have for making car body repairs.

Thanks for the pictures Bill!

I'll see if I can hack one together using some scrap, or see if there's a junked tach out there with that piece still attached.

I see you're in Madison Wis. Why not stop by World Wide Imports and visit with Peter Caldwell. He likely has one lying around.
I always thought that strip was part of the inductance loop and the tach wouldn't work without it. Course my tach's seldom worked anyway!

I am fairly confident that I have run those tachs without the clip... at least on the bench. Regardless, if you cannot find one they are a simple formed part that you can fabricate yourself if necessary. If nothing else I would want the clip to support that plastic cable holder.

My tach isn't working without it, but it could be something unrelated as I've never actually seen it work.

I checked with Peter awhile back and he didn't have any at the time. Amazing considering the vast stockpile he has there.

Well, Doug is probably right, I'm just working on an assumption. Shouldn't be hard to make one.

Kurt.

Just a note. A mechanic lost mine and made a new one out of brass. When I complained that the tach didn't work he realized that it must be made from steel as it is the core of a transformer with the Tach innards and the outer loop. Works now.

Thanks for the information. I still remember seeing one of them work without the metal clip but there may have been other factors involved since it was a bench test. I would definitely want the clip to support the wires and it's good to know that changing from brass to steel made the difference in getting one to work!
