Quick fuelpump fix

Offline
I figure'd I'd start this one. SU pump is in the mail. Priority Mail USPS. You should have it by friday or saturday Janel. Hope you ordered a rebuild kit. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Which diaphragm does she need, Kenny - they're different.

I don't know? It was the one I took of my car 2 years ago. probably the original 1977 model. Negative earth SU pump with points.

Some diaphragms have a 2-3/8" shaft, others have a 3"...& I don't remember which is which

I guess she can measure it in a couple days and then order a rebuild kit. I didn't know there was anything different about SU pumps other than pos or neg earth, and points or solid state switching.

Ah, that young trainee is why Master Yoda I am!

hehehehe....plus I read my Moss catalog most every day!

The longer one is for the solid state pump. An external difference is the plastic cover on the end has a "half barrel" protrusion to accomodate the large capacitor, where the points type cover is flat.

reading it in bed distubing of the force some think it is!

The book of St. MG, chapter 3, verses 4-7;
So then they went out, into the countryside. Searching for worthy twisty roads and ice cream stands. Keeping in mind all the time that thine electronics are of old, and thou whilst need to perform roadside repairs on thy rolling alter.

I haven't ordered a rebuild kit yet. Emma is running superbly right now (just came in from an hour run) and I may leave things alone for now--I'm busy shining my hooters.

By the way Kenny, I failed to thank you.

Thank you! Please let me know what I owe you.

Don't worry 'bout it. Enjoy!

JB: It is unusual for those pumps to fail from a diaphragm problem. Usually a disassembly and a GOOD cleaning will put 'em right. Pay attention to the long rod, clean it well and the bore it travels in (pipe cleaner and some lighter fluid or other high volitility liquid). If it's the points type (doubtful from a car that new) you can dress the points with a fine (600 grit) sandpaper and refit. "Pointless" pumps shouldn't need any attention to the little printed circuit board, just a cleaning of the "throw-over" mechanism.

Thanks Doc. I'll remember that.

The points are shot on this one. I tried filing them, and got it to barely tick over a few times (outside the car hooked straight to battery), and the diaphram is probably dry and stiff - all the other rubber in this car was when I got it. Needs rebuilt, and I bet it'll work fine.

See, that's why we have Doc around - to answer all the technical questions!

Oh, and Janel, Ignore the piece of paper in the box when you get it. I think it was info on the electronic SU that's in my car now.
