I don't have a cat, no smogcrap. But don't worry, I gave up on that idea. Wasn't executable.

I ~have~ R&R'd needle/seats in those carbs in situ, but not without a "Chapman Gun Screwdriver Kit," drainpan, patience and a LOT of experience doin' 'em OFF the engine beforehand. Best to "bench it" for the task, JB.

Sorry Janel, I shot from the hip on this one without reading what others had posted. They are right. Just forget everything that I just erased! ;-) Jack

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif....well, I would think it might be apparent if the float was stuck - gas running out everywhere!

I smell gas all the time, sitting or driving. Maybe it is running out. My patience is. Any other suggestions because I'm flat out of them and I'm in a foul mood.

And don't you go "MAN" on me Tony Barnhill.

Do you supose, do you just supose the choke is stuck open or partialy open?

Kind of hard doing this from a distance. Need to touch and feel a bit.

Disconnect the fuel line where it goes into the carb & turn the key on...fuel should run freely out the end of the hose.....with the fuel line still off the carb & clamped closed so gas won't runo out, spray starter fluid in the carb to see if it starts & runs until the starter fluid is completely burned

if it doesn't, you might still have ignition problems....if you take a spark plg out & put it back on its wire & hold it real close to the engine - i mean REAL close - & turn the key on, do you see a bright spark jump from the plug to the engine?

Fuel lines aren't clogged anywhere. I've checked them all. Car starts with starter fluid. Idles so low it dies if I even attempt to let up off the gas pedal. Something like -1400 RPMs.

I can't pull a plug and stick it REAL close to the engine then get in the car and start it - my arms and legs are too short.

I'm 99.9% certain the choke is not stuck open or partially open.

Doesn't matter - you answered the question: ignition's good...

I'm gonna ask a stupid question here: looking down on your carb - on the side where the accelerator cable comes in (nearest firewall) - are there 3 springs running from the carb to the bottom of the square part of the air filter housing?

Tony,

If I understand her right, it is not getting fuel. Do you think?

Pull the fuel line loose and tape a jar or something to the end of it, with that Duct tape you had left over from the distribtor job. Crank the engine for maybe 3 sec and see if you have gas in the jar. If so you know it is getting to the carb.

Test results here: How much fuel did you get? A little, a lot?

Again from a distance but wonder, just wonder if fuel pump is working properly?

Darn, I would like to get my hands dirty for just a min.

Two springs. But there is only a place for 2 springs. About 3/8" in diameter, 2" long?

Well, I thought it might not be getting gas & that's why I asked her to take th gas line loose & turn the ignition on to see if gas is bing pumped to the carb....

...okay, 2 springs are good for your car...I'm back to: is gas getting iinto the carb?

I questioned the fuel pump the night she died on me last week at the post office, I thought it sounded funny, wasn't ticking like it should, but that idea was ruled out at some point and I don't even remember how or why unless dh told me it wasn't the fuel pump.

I'm just not in the mood to pull the fuel line and check for gas any more tonight. I'm in the mood for a rum & coke and a smoke. I think I'll have the smoke. I MIGHT have the drink.

"Well, tomorrow's another day...we'll just go to Tara!"

A fuel pump doesn't always 'click' - once its built up & holds pressure, it stops clicking

...tomorrow, pull the fuel line (stick a mason jar under it is probably a pretty good idea) & turn on the ignition..gas should run out once the fuel pump pressurizes.....if no gas, we'll start with a BFH at the fuel pump

I feel like it's getting TOO much gas. I smell gas when I'm driving more often than not. Or when I WAS driving. I can smell it in the garage after she's parked a bit. No I don't smell it now, but she hasn't been driven since Friday.

I KNOW it's a carb problem. Fuel lines are clear, starter is fine, it's not ignition, spark plugs, points, condenser, battery.

~bangs head on desk~

TOMORROW dh is going to help fix this problem or there's going to be a war here.

My fuel pump never stops clicking or slows down clicking.

That BFH is going to come in handy tomorrow in more than one way possibly.
