As per my other post, Ms Triss is finally up on jacks to take care of some leaks. I had to put 4-5 oz of oil in the diff to compensate for the lovely spray pattern all around the universal joint. I know the seal is leaking but, as I prepare to replace it, a couple of questions.

1. When I installed this seal I didn't use permatex or anything like that - should I have?

2. My mechanic says that seals can sometime leak from the middle not the outside - ie between the spinning shaft and the inside circle of the seal. Has anyone experienced this? and can I do anything about it?

3. I could only get the nut on the pinion torqued to 140 lb instead of 200 lb - could this be problematic?

any other ideas?

some times if the seal has worn the pinion shaft a new seal- won't seal well. What they call a speedi sleeve can help this. It is a very thin walled sleeve that is pressed onto the pinion shaft and presents a new surface to the seal. the other thing is to try leaving the seal just a bit proud so that the inner lip is on a slightly different surface.

i have done several pinion seals and only been able to get the nut as tight as i could- and have had no problems yet...

speedi sleeve - thanks for that, I remember that now, is there any way to check that this is the issue? as opposed to a poorly installed seal for instance.

also, do folk use gasket sealer on their seals?
 
Oh, and is there also a speedi sleeve for the transmission end as I also seem to have oil there
 
and finally, where would I find one as Moss doesn't seem to carry them for a Midget diff

no gasket sealer should be used/needed in this application. an inspection of where the seal rides on the flange will tell you if you need to give this attention. There will be a visible wear ring around the shaft where the seal has worn into the flange.

Speedi sleeves come in many sizes, take a look at these links- there is some good info here. any good auto parts store should be able to get you one in the size you need

thanks Mark - just took the car for about a 15 Mile Jaunt - and it was throwing a lot! will have to pull it and see.

You should really have it in your hand to get a good measurement. Also to see if this relly is the problem.....

Update - picked up a Speedi Sleeve yesterday. Hope to get at it Saturday. For Canadians - PartSource had it for me in 4 hours - and, it's in their computer, go figure.

The part number for anyone else is 99138 if you are wondering.

Update. Had friend Larry come over today.

1. Pulled old rear pinion seal, speedi sleeve wasn't even close to fitting. Compared old pinion seal to new pinion seal - they weren't even close. The one that was there had the same Outer Diameter but, inner diameter was significantly larger - like at least a 1/16 gap between shaft and seal. Hmmm I wonder why it was leaking? replaced seal and not a drop - does make me wonder what the first seal was off of. (I had installed it, so, it wasn't original)

Took a test drive and the diff does seem to have a whine that it didn't have before. This doesn't make sense unless, a) it was run dry which could have happened, b) it gets louder with more oil, or c) we "joggled" the diff when we wedged the wheels to undo the pinion nut.

any thoughts?

we then put Barleak in the read - no more leaks and temp the same.

stop leak in the transmission - no more leak and it shifts better.

stop leak in the engine - a couple drips yet. OK 2 out of three ain't bad.

Then the test drive, passed a TR6 and a Spit, waves all around - all in all a glorious day.

Oh, and while we were finishing, the real estate agent called and our offer was accepted - hurray! we have a new home and with a 2 car garage.

wow ! there's a full day ! sounds like you have the leaks down to "acceptable" LBC standards, as we all know kinda like a Harley, check the gas & fill it up with oil ! :smile:
