Question about computer CPU's

Ok people, lets drop the US auto bailout, UAW, brewhaha for a few minutes. :wall: You can go back to it later (maybe). ANYWAY, someone has given me a motherboard that I would like to build my next computer around, but I'm having trouble deciding how much to pay for a processor. I'm looking at Athlon X2's. I realize you get what speed you pay for, but how much should I invest in a CPU? The cheap ones are miles ahead of what I have in the computer I'm using right now. Is it worth paying an extra $50 to $75 or more for the latest whizbang CPU or go with something a little less costly. We are not gamers or use the computer for big projects, just the standard few games, web surf, kids do home work on kinda machine. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What's the board? Which socket?

What language are you taliking Doc? I ask some of my friends that need computer work what socket they have and they say "Craftsman"

Sorry, I couldn`t resist *SMILE*

<SWOON>

*THUD!*

Hey doc,
Looks like a MSI K9VGM-V with an AM2 processor slot.

Ooohhh.

This is the least pricy 64 bit dual core one:

<span style="font-style: italic">Manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices, Inc
Manufacturer Part Number ADA4200CUBOX
Manufacturer Website Address www.amd.com
Marketing Information

Increase your performance by up to 80% with the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor. Work or play with multiple programs without any stalling or waiting. Dual-Core technology is like having two processors, and two working together is better and faster than one working alone.
Product Line Athlon 64 X2
Product Model 4200+
Product Name Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4200+ 2.2GHz Processor</span>

Should be available at under $100. And stuff 2G of DDR2 RAM on it... RAMs cheap now.

Doc:
Won`t he need a 64 bit op sys for that dual core processor?
I hate to mention it but ..... win xp or vista 64 bit op sys IS a bit pricy!
I put a 64 bit sys together for a fellow here a while back .... I`ll just say ..... Fast ..... mighty fast indeed!
Just saying ......

That would be true, if there were more than a small handful of multi-threaded programs out there. Some single core processors are still faster because hardly any home user has a program crunching numbers inna background. They may switch <span style="font-style: italic">between</span> programs, but the background program is usually sittin' idle.

Shouldn't need it. On the flip side, I installed BEOS on a 32 bit proc system. BE had a 64 bit file system.

Greg:
So ... what you are saying is a 32 bit op sys will run on a 64 bit board and processor?
I`m no computer guru here
just asking ......
I once tried to load win xp 64 on a 32 bit system, I can honestly tell you .... It`s a ... NO GO!
Yea ... I learned most of the stuff I think I know about computers by trial and error .... lots of error.
Just call me what my dad did ........ Curious Kerry

Yeah, they design in backward compatibility. Aren't you running Win 98? That has a lot of 16 bit code that you are probably running on a 32 bit processor.

Yes Greg, I never thought of it that way But I have ran win98 on a 32 bit system. It runs very well at that too!
I have upgraded one of my larger drives to XP Pro w/all of the security patches and upgrades installed and have been running it lately. {last few weeks}, Getting used to it and it seems fine so far. I have diligently been keeping everyone {kids and their friends} off of the machine so as to try not to get any unwanted bugs and the like.
I have the 98 drive on stand by just in case.
Wife wanted to print so .... new printer and xp it is!
So far so good!

You're correct you had trouble loading a 64bit system to a 32bit machine. The 64bit software expected to be able to use addresses inside the hardware up to the 64bit limit, which is outside the range of a 32bit processor. 32bit into 64 however, addressability isn't an issue since 32bit is well below the 64bit addressing available. There may be other issues based on the type of hardware and software, but that won't be one.
