how does it come apart? I have it off the bracket and the end rubber cap off - what next?

Smack open end against wood / non-marring surface, to bring plunger past lip. Or, just pull it out with your finger using suction. Spring is loose behind plunger, which houses rubber seal.

I had no success rebuilding mine, due to scored outer bore... replacement not prohibitively expensive, but not cheap either. ($48 from Moss, for ex.)

should be a inside diameter cir clip (spring steel retainer). use your hande cir clip pikers and remove it, the rest just falls out. pay attention to the order and orientation.
