Yea well, marking her spot if fine but not with a half a cup of oil.

Ran her again today hard. No change in oil leakage.

Now I need to bleed the clutch again. Not hard to bleed, just hard to get all the air out.

Oh yea cause someone asked. 125 lbs compression in all cylinders. Think my old compression tester, maybe 45 years old reads low, at least it did on the race car. Anyhow they are all the same.

No amount of running seems to help. Am going to wait till the breather for the fuel pump mount comes and try that but I do not expect it to help.

That oil really blows out of there quarter to half a cup on a run around the subdivision.

Engine is running well, pressure great. Guess I am going to have to open it up again and look some more. At this point I just can not think what it might be. I did check the oil pump cover and it seemed to be on there well but will of course need to check it again and then again. I have a hard time beleiving that all that oil can come from the scroll seal eyebrow.

Supose there is some way I have the back bearing in wrong. How in the world can you do that? What a PITA. I will take lots of pics for you guys to mull over.

I think we are all pulling out our last hairs in our heads about this problem.

Let's try the new vent kit when you get it. Then we will go from there.

Been doing a bit of research. This is quoted from the orginal shop manual and I did not do it.

"The rear main bearing cap horizonal joint surfaces should be thourghly cleaned and lightly covered with a sealing compound before the cap is fitted to the cylinder block. This ensures a perfect oil seal when the cap is bolted down to the block"

With the amount of oil that is comming out I must have a major leak point misfit. I can pull that rear bearing cap with the pan down and clean and seal.

Think I will try that, otherwise, shrug I don't think I have a clue yet. At least this work I can do laying down on the job. LOL

Weather permiting I will try this in the morning.

What say you guys, a leak of the magnatude I have must/could mean a real bad bearing cap mismatch somehow.

Oh forgot: Page A.22 section A.30 To Install(5).
 
Pulling it back out and looking will reveal. I wonder what the tranny looks like? Is it still "leaking"?
 
Tranny was fine on the last pull. No prob there. Not only that I can see the oil level go down in the crank case.

I'm glad you brought this back up. What exactly is HYLOMAR, Jeff? I've been meaning to ask you. I have always used rtv or indian head. Is there a local source for Hylomar?
 
Barry, Hylomar is a non hardening sealant developed by Rolls Royce to seal their aircraft jet engines. It's been the standard of the British car industry for years.
It was briefly sold by Permatex here in the States, but that relationship has lapsed, from my understanding. When I found out about that, I went to my neighborhood NAPA and bought the last ten tubes they had in their Detroit warehouse. Here's a link to the product.

On the ends where the bearing block fits to the cast in block and??????


all the flat surfaces. including the scroll seal cover????
 
Jack, I use it on the mating surfaces where the rear main seats to the block, and to the scroll cover. On the "eyebrow", I use it on the surface that contacts the cap, and both sides of the gasket.
The book specifies using it on the horizontal mating surface of the cap.

My thoughts exactly. I have never used RTV on British motors. I use Permatex Tack & Seal #9AR. It is white and also does not harden. I have never had oil leak problems other than the aforementioned one regarding the 1275 crank case venting problem. It sounds similar to the Hylomar Jeff mentioned.
