Progress: header and carbs

Today was a good day for Tunebug progress. The evening started with some frustration around removing the steering column -- which needed to be pulled to get the exhaust header in place and was resolutely refusing to budge. A quick trip here for advice and I had the instructions necessary to get the job done.

Once that was out of the way I grabbed the world's most useful tool (the Dremel rotary tool) and did a minor bit of grinding to make room for the header. A nip here and a tuck there and the header was in. On went the carbs and the air/fuel side of the engine was looking good!

A few days ago I installed some of the bits on the other side of the engine as well, so the oil filter housing is in place (thanks to fellow BCFer John Kuzman for the proper gasket) and the distributor is loosely in place as well. The distributor will still need to be placed properly, as it's probably 180 degrees out -- I didn't check the location, just got it in place.

Still a lot of fiddly work to do, but this was a nice bit of progress. Lots of adjustments and setup to do, but I should be ready to fire up the engine in a few weeks. Feels great to be getting closer!

No kidding - you're getting close Drew. Is the ball rolling down hill or still feel like you are pushing it up?

A bit of both, really. Things keep cropping up (like the struggles with the steering column) that stretch my meager mechanical knowledge, but I'm working through them as best as I can. My list is getting shorter, though, and that feels really good.
 
Very nice. I like the top side timing marker. The ceramic coated
header looks great. Can't wait to see a varooom post.
 
About that accordion style bypass hose... I ran one for several years without any problem what so ever, but several people told me they are prone to failure. I switched mine for regular heater hose and have the accordion one for a spare.

But like I said, I used the accordion one for several years and many miles with no sign of trouble.
 
A few weeks Drew. Hay there is more than enough time yet this week to have a drive Sunday. Looks like three or four hours work for you. Remember many of us can install engine and tranny in 5.5 hours and drive away.

The track guys only take about an hour.

Do understand you are being very careful of your new stuff.

Press on and we will cheer you on.
 
So what do you think is the "worst" job remaining? Sometime I'll get stuck on something and then just force myself to knock it off the to-do list first.

This all new for me, Jack, so I have to go very slow and figure out how things work as I go. I'd love to be done this weekend, but I'm just not that good yet. :smile:
 
Hey - how long has it taken to get to this point? What's an extra couple of days or week to get it right.

Sometime I have to remind myself it took 40+ years for her to get into this condition so why am I rushing to fix it all in a fraction of the time....
 
Three years, more or less. Usually feels like more!

I'm just anxious to get it looking/acting like a car rather than a pile of projects. Last night's work really helped that forward.
 
I'm not sure Drew has any worse jobs left. He has done all the hard stuff.

He is just about a Bugeye expert.

Drew's heatshield was recycled because it was in usch good shape, most are cracked. I source new heatshields form two places, Moss, is pated, kinda cross between white and yellow zinc, the one Gordon (the B hive) gets me are black, I like the black ones better, I think it gives better contrast, since we were not going to palte a single heatsheild, I painted Drew's with hi heat gloss black.
 
Good as reason as any. Should be engine color though.

However, before you think I am getting pickie mine is not painted at all yet.
