Looks like some kind of measuring device that might fit down inside an aircraft engine cylinder.

Could it be for setting props?
 
Elliot - that is a brilliant idea. What do you suppose the large and small holes are, at the bottom of the "piston"? Also, the small threaded hole a few inches above the bottom?

Honestly I have no idea. The tool just looks (to me) to be used to balance a prop.
As for the threaded holes, that is above my pay grade :smile:

I'm afraid not, Tom. I have a number of his engine repair manuals, some P&W pins and his ID badge. He always told the story that on the day I was born he was trapped in an engine testing room when they turned on the engines and only got out by signaling with his flashlight.
 
That's an engine part that was shipped to Germany, I think a few went to Japan? :unsure:
