Guys-- any opinions on powder-coating new floorboards prior to welding them in? Seems to me if i just mask off the edges that's all I'll need. There are enough powdercoat colours out there to match closely enough the new body color, too. Thanks, jim

Nothing wrong with doing that as long as the weld area is clean. Not sure how the powdercoat will take the heat from welding however.

If you keep the powder coating back a few inches you should be fine. I would becareful with spatter if you use Flux Core wire feed. My opinion would be to paint/coat it after welding.

I think that would be great, if you plug weld it just spray each weld with compressed air to cool it off right away and that will help with any warping too, just lay something over the floor board to keep the weld splatter off. Most powder coating it tested to with stand 1k to 2k hours of salt spray and it is not porous like paint. I am a powder coater :yesnod: it is actually cured in an oven at 400 degrees, you can also get a high zinc content primer coated on them before the color. Powder coating is great for use as a primer for paint to.

Here ia a photo of the interior floor pans taken in 2008, 18 years after I restored my 1958 TR3A (body off) and the 2-pack paint I used is still as good as it was in 1990.

If powdercoating is cheaper, go for it. If you only plan to drive on dry days in the summer, you don't need it.

My TR3A looks the same under the car as well after 20 years and 103,000 miles with ordinary car paint.
