GT6 Possible GT6 purchase - repairability?

Progress on my TR6 has been slow since I have a lot of other things going on. Naturally, with no free time but lots of opportunities for web surfing while at work, my thoughts have turned to buying a new Triumph... I always fancied a Mk 3 GT6.

I found a 1973 GT6 for sale locally and went along to have a look this morning. It needs new sills, which I feel is less daunting on a GT6 than it would be on a convertible (am I wrong?) and there is a dent in the front chassis outrigger, which looks like I could replace it, even with my meagre welding skills. There is a small hole in the driver's floorboard which looks like it could be patched since the rest of the floor is solid. I know that that small patch of rust on the rear wheelarch will most likely be a lot more work than I want to believe at this point, but let's think positive! The front corner pieces are both rusted through, but they look to be bolt on and available (again, am I wrong?).

It runs, which is a plus, but it has sat for a couple of years and needs a good work through of the suspension and brakes.

So far, so good. Well, so far not totally out of the question.

The biggest problem I could see is the roof panel. It is all solid except for the leading edge, where there are a couple of holes rusted through. There is also some rust in the side channels - the car has been outside under a tarp for two years and it looks like the current owner didn't clear the damp leaves out of the channel before covering it.

Any thoughts or advice (other than to run away!)? Asking price is $650. Anyone have a good Spitfire bodyshell they don't want?

Cheers
Alistair

It sounds like a lot of rust repair, while not as plentiful as Spitfires, there are GT6s to be had out there, they used to be remarkably cheap, but I think they are starting to creep up--so now may be the time to jump.

That sounds like a lot of welding there - I'd balance that against a $3-4K purchase for a scruffy but more solid one...

The car does sound like it needs a lot of work but for a asking price of $650…… I haven’t been keeping up on the going rate of a GT6 “fixer upper” but for a complete car that price doesn’t sound bad. Question is do you want to put all the time and money into fixing it up or spend more buying a car that is in better shape.

If the engine is in really good condition, (not just it sort of runs, sputter sputter..... ...) Then it may be worth buying just for the mechanicals and getting a second one with a better body / not quite running engine. Rebuilding an engine costs more than the cost of the car.

Could you remove the roof, rust and all, and convert the GT6 to a soft-top?! (Maybe it's a silly question.)

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I just called Rimmer Bros - they list a repair section for the roof, but it is apparently out of production now, and the ocmpany who made it have closed down. They did offer the advice that the rear edge of an old style mini roof is the same as a GT6 front edge, and a look on ebay.co.uk shows a mini roof panel for $40. I reckon that the sheet metal I would certainly need would cost about $800, plus paint etc. of course. From my TR6 restoration I found that everything costs at least 3 times what you think, so let's say $3000 in parts.

If I knew of a decent Spitfire body tub I would be happy to go with a Spit6, but I don't think I can use the GT6 tub really - I would still need quite a lot of Spitfire parts to finish the rear. I suppose I could make a Spit 6 pick up...not the worst idea ever - if you want to see the worst idea ever have a look at the Dolomite Sprint pick up for sale on Robsport's website!

I am not sure whether I want to get into it - I don't have the welding skills at the moment, but when will I learn the skills if I don't do something like this? Apparently one night of sleeping on it wasn't enough. Maybe tomorrow I will come to my senses!
Cheers

I liked it until I saw the tail lights. $6,000 to start is a pretty big nugget for a car that will have little resale value.

Allistair, for my tuppence worth, I'd kindly advise you to forget about this GT6. If you don't have decent welding skills, it will cost way too much money to completely restore this car.

If there's as much visible rust as you've noted, you may rest assured that there's a whole lot more that you cannot see.

Good "project" GT6s (i.e., without rust) can be had for just a few thousand dollars. Get one without rust, your life will be much easier.

And remember, it's easy to get "upside down" financially in a GT6 since the resale values are relatively low.

Find a nice example, plop down a few thousand, and drive it. It's worth the extra money, trust me.

Good luck, let us know . . .

I think I am pretty much decided against taking on a mission impossible style restoration - for the time being at least! If anyone wants a challenge let me know and I will give you the contact details of the seller. He also has a few MGBs, a Midget and a TR7 as well as another GT6, all or none of which may be for sale. They aren't going anywhere before a lot of gardening work is done, if you know what I mean...

Thanks for all the advice and ideas

Is this a yellow GT6? I believe the seller is a friend of mine. He will move on the price. He does want to get rid of this car. Its best chances are a Spit 6 conversion. The body is really shot. Too bad I only like the larger TR models.

None of the other rustbuckets on the property are for sale. They all belong to his parents in TN. They are going to restore them someday.....

The other GT6 needed mechanical work, but the body was more sound. That was a few years ago though....
