Progress on my TR6 has been slow since I have a lot of other things going on. Naturally, with no free time but lots of opportunities for web surfing while at work, my thoughts have turned to buying a new Triumph... I always fancied a Mk 3 GT6.
I found a 1973 GT6 for sale locally and went along to have a look this morning. It needs new sills, which I feel is less daunting on a GT6 than it would be on a convertible (am I wrong?) and there is a dent in the front chassis outrigger, which looks like I could replace it, even with my meagre welding skills. There is a small hole in the driver's floorboard which looks like it could be patched since the rest of the floor is solid. I know that that small patch of rust on the rear wheelarch will most likely be a lot more work than I want to believe at this point, but let's think positive! The front corner pieces are both rusted through, but they look to be bolt on and available (again, am I wrong?).
It runs, which is a plus, but it has sat for a couple of years and needs a good work through of the suspension and brakes.
So far, so good. Well, so far not totally out of the question.
The biggest problem I could see is the roof panel. It is all solid except for the leading edge, where there are a couple of holes rusted through. There is also some rust in the side channels - the car has been outside under a tarp for two years and it looks like the current owner didn't clear the damp leaves out of the channel before covering it.
Any thoughts or advice (other than to run away!)? Asking price is $650. Anyone have a good Spitfire bodyshell they don't want?
Cheers
Alistair
