Transmission removed on BJ8 ready to install new seals noticed a lot of play in first motion shaft
could this be a bearing failure or housing wear, and importantly is it an easy fix.

Well:
It could be a relatively easy fix if the shims located at the front of the bearing have failed or are not there ?

There is some lateral motion of the first motion shaft noticeable with the gearbox out of the car. What you see may be normal. When the gearbox is installed, the nose of the shaft is supported by the pilot bushing in the rear of the crankshaft. Inspect the condition of the shaft bearing in the gearbox bellhousing.

Thanks for your advises handy to know before strip down, the input shaft has no for and aft play but laterally about 5mm
this seems rather a lot to me maybe why the seal has been weeping? the pilot bushing is ok. anyway a job for the Easter weekend pull the bellhousing and take a peek looks like rubbish weather anyway.
