Planing my built. Stock vs transplant

Engine is not related to Massey Ferguson tractor.
The engine in a Triumph TR3 (and TR4) is related to a Ferguson tractor engine, but that's a completley different deal.

I'm racing and do not bother with an oil cooler. They look cool, but I doubt you really need one.

The stock SU carbs are my preference.....by far.

Pertronix electronic ignition is good and not real expensive. But points are OK too.

The knock-on alloy wheels mentioned above look really great. But they are $320 each.
I'm a fan of painted silver over chrome wire wheels but that's a personal choice (my MGB has painted wire wheels). I've actually seen some of these cars with wire wheels painted black....I wouldn't do it, but it's kind of interesting. Again, a matter of personal choice.

The use of the deep sump (about 1" deeper) and matching pick up is a better investment than an oil cooler. Allows for more oil and helps prevent oil starving in the corners.

Now that's a cool website. Not sure I would pay 5 g for a motor but how cool would that. Be. 6.5k rpm. Would sound awesome

I bought this engine on e-bay for $350 with tranny and installed it in a few weekends. It did cost me a few hundred for the auxiliaries. Costs me more for the brakes and interior than the motor/tanny.

Billm If you set it up well then it is almost as reliable as any other car. BillM [/quote said:
There is a bit of wiggle room in that statement......... I always thought that reliability was like pregnancy: either you are or you aren't.

I love my LBC, but I would never call it reliable, there is always something to fix, adjust, tune or improve. And I would not have it any other way!

Having experience with wire wheel's I would recommend the painted. Chromes look great...when they are clean! Plenty of work involved in keeping them that way whereas a good washing at the local car wash makes the painted wires look good. Also, all wires are very expensive unless the ones you have and the hubs are in very good condition. They should be removed and the splines on the hubs and wheels cleaned with a wire brush and solvent each year. Then repacked, but before doing it seal up the ends of the spokes inside the wheel hub's with silicone. That way the outside of your wheel will stay better looking (no grease leaking out)and a little less water will get inside.

When I was young my friends and I avoided wires but now days, since something like that is never seen anymore, thay look very cooool!!

Kurt.

I also should put in couple of words on engine swaps. I've done probably the simplest swap which is a Datsun 5sp transmission AND engine. The datsun 5sp is commonly swapped and everything is available for that...I just added the engine as well. Nials right....took far longer than I anticipated. (plan on more though). The stock engine has a lot going for it and not much else fits without a lot of butchery.

Wow rotary power... Way cool.

I'll have to lOok around and see what I like. The wires are stock and at this point I don't know what a good spline looks like.

Reusing wires doesn't sound too complicated though. Gues if I can do a motocucle rim I could handle the mg wheel. Who is a good source for outer rims and spokes if I need them?

$350 with that carb too?

Either way, seems like a deal!?

Gundy, you car sounds like it wants to kick some butt! Who built your motor? And is that HS4's on it, or HS2's?

Didn't we just have a thread about good splines? With pictures?

Im in the middle of putting a mazda 12a rotary in my '65 sprite (yes, still in the middle) and in retrospect, I wished I had just built up the 1275 that came with the car. I'd probably have it running by now and be out enjoying it instead of it sitting on jack stands in the garage. someday.
