Again worked all day on the "new" midget. I finally ran out of welding wire and quit for the day. I got the new sill installed but could not finish welding all the tiny holes I drilled. I ended up taking more time and building a new lower hinge support out of some metal I had and welding it in place.
The pictures are mostly of the surface rust in the places I found it and the few rust through places. I went out and bought welding wire, so the plan now is to finish the welds and weld a small plate in the front of the panel I installed and then another small scab plate in the driver floorboard where I found a hole.
I plan to then coat everything with por-15 and then top coat it.
I plan to paint the car purple so the engine bay will probably be a light purple color.
Toward the end is a pic of the missing cover or cap on the transmission seen the shifter hole.

I will take pics of the completed panel install when I finish it. I am not sure when that will be. This is a short week and I am going to the beach(first time in many years) for a week after that. I have lots of momentum on this project right now and I don't really want to lose it.

Should that hole not be a plug like a freeze plug?

That is what I don't know jack. The PO had a piece of foam rubber covering it. I wanted someone with a 1500 to tell me what they have there. The catalogs are not any help. Maybe the haynes manual will mention it. I have not checked that yet.

Nice car stand, Kim.

I really need to get a welder some day.

Yes, There is supposed to be a plug in that hole (much like a freeze plug).

I did not find it on the Spitbits web site but I did find it at Victoria British. It is their part:
2-8258 END COVER-TRANSMISSION $1.95

I vote for freeze plug as that shift section is lubed by splash from the tranny gear box. Unless you were doing a rust preventive exercise you would not want to loose oil out of it.

I am creating a mental list of things I need to order for the car, that will be added. Right now mp plan is to try and finish the welds on evenings this week and then por-15 and topcoat every thing on Saturday and then sunday leave on vacation. This will giver everything plenty of time to dry without me messing with it by trying to install something and mess up that paint. Then the next week. This painting will inlude the pedal box and all that. That por 15 holds up good to brake fluid and that is just awesome. I want all that back together and get it drivable again so I can move the cars in and out to get out the one I want to drive.

Not really. This is the single rail Triumph box. The shift ball area is really pretty dry apart from grease.

Yep, not much oil gets up there that you can afford to loose any.

It's more of a simple cap or a dust cover than a freeze plug on the back of the tranny. It doesn't have to withstand temperature or pressure. It just keeps dirt out of the linkage grease and seals up the linkage box -- it isn't connected to the tranny oil at all. Probably loosened up and vibrated itself off years ago. Bit of foam in the hole is as good a fix as any; it isn't doing any harm there. The Usual Sources' covers work, but anything round of the same diameter will work too.

BTW, Kim, I notice there's a lot of different paint colors under that white! I'd be curious to know how many different parts came together to make yours over the years. (Nigel was mostly Citron in front, red in back, one blue fender, orange trunk lid, all overpainted red)

That's what I was trying to say in my long-winded manner. There is no connection between the shifter housing and the gearbox oil.

I was going to suggest a piece of sheet metal JB Welded into the end until I saw that VB has the part for under $2. Moss sells the part for about $2.50.

It was originally green but not BRG, a bit lighter than that. Then it was orange but a good job of orange, almost to make me think it was a factory repaint, then it was painted BRG (decent job)and then it was painted white(horrible job).

No connection, Intresting, thanks.
