Pic of that cardboard thing...

174744-newengine002.jpg

Though a real nice job, there are some personal touches in that compartment (& I like some of them); however, somebody wants to know what's not stock:

1. Obvious: engine color, mud shield, engine compartment color
2. thermostat color should match engine - in this case black
3. Missing a decal on the valve cover
4. Missing the loop on the oil cap that attaches it to the valve cover
5. Some hose clamps
6. The vacuum line from distributor is routed incorrectly (though probably better than original)
7. Gulp valve should be natural anodized color, not black
8. Carb heat shield & preheat items should be natral anodized color, not silver
9. Decal on air cleaner is incorrectly mounted
10. Oil breather hose (oil seperator to carb) should be a 1-piece unit
11. Brake booster vacuum line incorrectly mounted & routed
12. Depending on year, fuel line should go to rear of carb, not front
13. Gulp valv to air pump hose incorrectly routed
14. Check valve should be natural anodized color
15. Clamp to air temp regulator should be natural anodized, not black

...& I might have missed a few things that I would see if I were judging the car in person at a show

...again, I'm not knocking what's a beautiful job, I'm just pointing out what's not original to help somebody who might be trying to make there's original....heck, I wish most of my engine compartments were so nice!

hummm...That is one clean engine compartment... although I' am really not a big fan of the blue, i know it just a personal thing but as I've gotten more serious in the hobby I prefer to keep things as original as possible....Actually I will be stripping down the engine compartment in my 58 MGA to repaint the black the original dark red(don't know what possessed me to paint it silver)....

On a related note Tremclad makes a color thats very close to the original dark red(ealier cars, before Leyland cheaped out and painted everything black)...I've got about 15 cans of it stashed in the basement in case they ever stop making it.....it's become vital in my TC resto.

Hi Tony,
thanks for the feedback, some of the items I was aware of and others not. Most of the list are items that I have repositioned or routed as was. The brake booster line I cannot see in the pic. Anyway thanks for the list it gives me some things to work on.
Cheers Ric

Hey, Ric - I like the rerouting of the distributor line...mine is always getting burned where the factory put it...I might steal that idea from you!

Maybe I missed it... What color is the outside of the car?

I routed my distributer vacuum line around the back of the valve cover....it goes through a small clamp attached to one of the bolts for the water choke spout (now a blanking plate on mine). Hides it nicely on mine, since it's manifold connection is on the rear runner of the DCOE mainfold.

Black body, and I say again. A fine fine looking engine room. You should be rightfully proud to show it off.

I thought it was black. And the fuel line on mine goes in at the front outside of the carb too. I even have a few original hose clamps! Probably a few original hoses! I have all the hose clamps that have been replaced on mine though in the trunk.

Many thanks to all for the amazing ammount of interest, opinions and information this has generated.
Once again many thanks to to Tony for pointing out some of them, I have managed to locate a fairly good diagram of what the hose layout should look like, amazing the internet. Will re-route as time allows.
Off to the UK in 20 days time, gonna be away for 6-7 weeks, should give me time for a spot of MG parts shopping
Cheers Ric

Uh-oh... can ya bring me back: a used set of Lucas "flamethrowers", err... all the seals for a factory MGB hard top, a rear bumper for a +2 Elan, some Lucas tail lamp assemblies for same, a Spyder space frame for an Elan S-3, some hub carriers for BOTH, Girling brake and clutch master cylinders for ALL of the above... ummm... mebbe a hardtop for the S-3...

BACK OFF you guys! I saw 'im FIRST!!!

*KIDDING* Ric... really.

Have fun and a safe return. Hope you find stuff YOU are looking for, and a good time too. Don't forget to enjoy a good vindaloo now and again. And think how *GREEN* we're gonna be as you relate your adventures on your return /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Actually I was only gonna ask for a WRC Cosworth Escort - But I think his suitcase will already be full with your elan space frame. Dang. Seriously tho... If you can grab me a set of UK spec late model MGB taillight lenses...

I think all you'll need is a screwdriver and a lookout. Shouldn't cost anything.

Understands, I wasn't knocking the work - its exceptionally clean...just answering somebody's question

have fun in the UK...we're going over Jun-July

aye, thanks for answering the question, Tony. I like the look of the engine bay too. But learning what's truly a stock engine compartment is what prompted me to ask the question.
