Photobucket Workaround

And yet now, at least for me the Berenson pic doesn't work - though it did earlier this morning.

JP - is the MGTD photo gone for you also?

Thanks. Just changed something in the post #16.

Can you see both the MGTD in post #5, and the Berenson photo in post #16 now?

I wonder if bypassing the forum photo loader and using the old "img" format will work:
URL]

Nope, that don't work. Must be Lucas Software.

copied the full link instead of the abbreviated link auto loaded by forum software to test.

Ah ha. So it looks like the Flickr URL works if I use it as copied, rather than using the abbreviated URL set by forum software, and the old "img" format.

I can't see #16 on my iPhone, but I can see it on my Android tablet.

Weird-a-mundo.

Soon computer systems will be so safe and secure, absolutely nothing will go in or come out.

I'm confused - the forum software isn't going to abbreviate the URL. You should copy the complete URL from the Flicker site first - then either:

1. Past the URL in your post and surround it by image tags:
"
"

or
2. Click on the "Insert Image" icon in the editor and select the "From URL" tab. Then post the complete URL that you copied from Flickr into the URL field. There is a check box that is checked by default that says "Retrieve remote file and reference locally"
If you leave that checked than it will actually download the picture from Flicker onto my hard drive and when you see the image it will be the image on my server. However, if you uncheck that box, the image you see will be the image retrieved from Flicker (assuming they allow hot linking)

One of the issues I'm finding is that many photo sharing sites these days don't let you see a direct url to the image. So there's no url to copy and paste.

I've tried three sites last night, and they all let me open a page showing only the image I select - but wouldn't let me see the image url itself. Seem to be imbedded via java script or something. Also very interesting that some systems show images (Android) that don't show on other systems (iPhone).

Soon all computer systems will be so safe and secure, that you won't be able to put anything in, or get anything out.

Hence the option here to just upload the image directly to the server. That way, you are not dependent on the "hosting" site since the image is hosted directly on my server and if someday you close your account on the hosting site, the image associated with you post here will still be here. I think the reason a lot of sites are moving away from allowing hot-longing directly is because it is a huge drain on their resources (every time anyone views pictures hot linked on their servers, it sucks up band width. That's probably why Photobucket is charging an arm and a leg to allow hot linking (I think they're nuts, but never mind).

Basil - if I put photos on your BCF server, where should they be put? I was assuming they could only be uploaded to a specific post.

I copy the exact URL from Flickr, with a .jpg on the end, hit the photo button, box pops up "error: invalid URL" and so I did the workaround. IF I copied the URL from the posted link, above the photo, it is abbreviated with .....in the middle, and it will not work. If I obtain the non-abbreviated URL of the photo, add between brackets and img tags, it posts. But it WILL NOT using the forum software directly.

So...how many MB's can we put on your server before we get cut off and have to start deleting? THAT is the primary reason we use external hosting.

Both work for me. Both use the staticflickr jpg url

View attachment 49408 This is what I get, every time. Not sure what the reference locally box is for, but it is auto-checked. I slid things over as far as I could, trust me, the .jpg is there in the URL.

Uncheck the "Retrieve remote file ..." box and I'll bet it works.

test post for BCF blog photo url.

Looks like it worked. I right clicked the photo in my Blog post, copied the "location", then pasted the location into the Post Image box in this post.
