@*#&@*&#&@&#@*&#*@& Part 2

There used to be a process called "pinning" that involved drilling a hole at each end of the crack, tapping said holes and screwing a small bolt into the hole and cutting the top off flush. Next a second hole was drilled next to the first hole and slightly overlapping it. This was tapped and another small bolt screwed in and cut off flush. This was repeated untill the entire crack was filled. Done properly it was water tight in cast iron. Old tech and not used much anymore but it did work. Paul.

I´ve a couple of used heads sitting on the bench at home - think they´re good but can´t remember...won´t be home for a bit yet though.

The valves, springs etc should be usable as the head was freshly rebuilt when I put it on and it only has 300 miles on it if that. To bad it cracked as it was a nice piece of work.

Does this ring any alarm bells? A crack showing up just after a rebuild suggests....what? Was the rebuild faulty or the installation or what? What causes cracks like this? Just trying to learn....

Cast iron welding when done by someone who knows what they are doing can be expensive, but it really the only way to go, Indy Cylinder Head in Indiapolis is the best I've ever seen, and most MGB head crack from the water jacket outward, so that is as easy a weld job as you can get, I guessing maybe $150-200 for them to repair it, I used them on race heads before, excellant work.

well got the replacement head today and broke it down and took it to the shop. So far it looks ok but I'll know for sure by friday. Got my fingers crossed.

And if you sell a head never ever ever ever ever pack a head in foam penuts. Evil stuff

hehehehehe.....

They ship well rolled in bubble wrap.

he packed it fine with blue foam and lots of cardboard but then for some reason tossed in 2 handfulls of penuts. That stuff was deep inside the head. Then again it could of been the ups guy as he was a bit peeved. Dont have a set of leaf springs and a cyl head show up on the same day if your ups guy has to climb stairs.

:Happy Dance: New head is not cracked and should be ready in the next week or 2. New hardened seats new valves new springs and new guides.

Big valve head as well.

WHOO HOO...I just had the machine shop call to tell me a head I'd taken to them has 3 little cracks...oh well.

Excellent, one step at a time.
