Don't give up so soon, Stew. Hunt down a machine shop wot has welding capability along with pressure testing. The head may be saveable.
 
My machine shop does that repair as a side line 'cause it's so easy for them!! :thumbsup:

Gentlemen,

My two cents worth...

Although there are several ways to repair this crack I, think that trying to repair the cracked head is not the best path. In my experience I have found that a crack, in general, results from a head that is warped.

I would bite the bullet and buy a used head, have it magnafluxed, have it milled and do a valve job... put it on and toss the old one. Or buy a new/remanufactured head.

It seems that whether you go for the 'salvage the cracked one', buy used, or new one, it's going to cost you about a K-buck plus or minus a couple hundred.
 
I would just bet Tony sells used B heads much cheeper than that.

My K-buck is based upon ~$250 for a 'good' used head, new valves and valve job, maybe new springs, magnaflux, milling, gaskets, new studs, and, of course, the 'Might As Wells' that we invariably find... :wall:

AND, if it comes out substantially less, then, Wow, what a deal!!... :cheers:
 
Geez I bought a good MGC head and had all that stuff done for less than half of that!!!

Oh yeah, that was in 1986 dollars.
How much inflation has there been in 22 years?

Ok, a K-buck isn't what it used to be!

If you budget $1K for the job and get it done for half, then you have a windfall budget excess of $500 to spend on those other 'Might As Wells' or trick schtuff that you have been wanting... :banana:
 
Heads with cracks like that can be repaired...its called stitching...but usually about the cost of a good used head...if you can find one.

The CPI between 1986 & 2008 has increased by about 1.93. This makes $500 in 1986 worth about $965 today.

That's what I was thinking, and it was a "C" head (bigger than a "B" head) and I did have it done at a very good shop.
I always felt that I got a good deal.

Boy-o-Boy it was pretty when I brought it home too! :wink:

The valves, springs etc should be usable as the head was freshly rebuilt when I put it on and it only has 300 miles on it if that. To bad it cracked as it was a nice piece of work.

I'm debating on what to do. Basil may have something next week. There is a big valve head on ebay from a guy I have bought stuff from before and had good luck with however I have a strong feeling it will quickly go to a stupidly high price or I can go aluminum but thats not cheap but its new and should be ready to build up.

I think anyway I look at this I'm going to pay more for a head than I did for the car. :wall:

I think I'm going to start putting glass in a windshield to get my mind off it.

In accounting, the value of real property is always amortized in the purchase price rather than current market value....

The cars value, however, are up to you and the market... :smirk:
