When my 73 was new, I would wax, and wax, buff, and wax, and wax to try and see my reflection. It was a labor of love, but a real pain in the behind. If the modern urethane paints were available in the seventies, you can bet your sweet bippy they would have used the base and clear coat method or at the least just urethane.

That said, I guess it is all in the eyes of the beholder, but I have painted with enamels and want nothing more to do with them.

Just another old geezer's opinion.
 
One thing to consider is the high cost of material used in refinishing. It's not unusual to spend $400 to $600 per gallon for reds and some metallics. A gallon of primer can run over $100.00 and tape is $4.00 per roll...then you have sandpaper, masking paper and the like. Plus putty, spot fillers, etc...

I've seen my buddy Tracy spend $400 on materials PLUS the paint.

Since I'm a cheap-ass I like using Kirker paints. I've done two paint jobs on daily drivers that turned out pretty good and spent less than $200.OO on paint and materials. Or go to MAACO and get their $400.00 paint job...not a bad deal for an older daily driver.

I have to paint my '95 Continental this year....I should be able to get'er done for under $250.00...but, again, I'm cheap.
