OUCH! Generic vs Brand Name Prescriptions

My doctor prescribed a med for me to take and I went to the WalMart pharmacy to fill it. Geez, $632.00 for a 90 day supply! I opted for the generic instead, 10 bucks for 90 days. I saved $622.00.

No, it was not Viagra.

Notice how I sorta knew the colour of Viagra.

Actually took it once. Almost blew the top of my head off. Or is that too much information?

ah! viagra? ... what?, i just make my wife turn the music way up mostly hard rock, then do this dance with the dunke, our parrot, several links of pork sausage, an umbrella and several strings of old xmass lights, then shes able to get me right to sleep. :frown:

Just please don't tell us the episode lasted more than four hours

Bill, It just dawn on me that you spoke of money. You don't have any drug reps in your back pocket?

Drug reps don't call on dentists.....heck, we barely get samples of toothpaste!

Bill,

Watch it. The number of inefficient generics is steadily climbing.Today I know of 4 different drugs.
A molecule is one thing, its engineered biodisponibility is another. Sorry for shop talk but I thought it might help.

A few weeks ago a similar subject came up. Someone made mention of something that could have been very important to me, my health, and future finances. I asked for some information and when I came back later the thread had been removed. Still have no idea why that thread was pulled.

Bill, the money you saved probably made you feel better than any pill could have.

No pun intended.

Maybe.

Avoid Viagra as much as possible. The stuff has already killed more than 30 US citizens and 7 europeans. Toxic if you have a latent vascular condition, due to strong dilatation effect on blood vessels.

While I do not want to get into a debate here, caution should be used with this class of drugs with anyone using nitrate-based drugs such as isosorbide and nitroglycerin; alpha-blocker drugs such as doxazosin or tamsulosin; some antibiotics such as itraconazole or ketoconazole; and even cimetidine (Tagamet).

Viagra (as well as Levitra and Cialis) should be used with caution with patients who already have high (or low) blood pressure, cardiovasular disease (including MI and stroke), and other physiological abnormalities.

I doubt seriously if Viagra alone has caused the 37 deaths that you mention. Problems such as this usually occur when patients do not follow the recommendations of their health professionals.

BTW...I am a pharmacist

Rick,
Sorry for the shop talk, but I buy my generic Lipitor and Plavix from CanadaPharmacy.com. I know that generic Plavix was available here until several years ago when the manufacturer won a suit to take it off the market. It is available everywhere else in the world but the US. Is is good, and I see where the makers of Lipitor have an ad out about avoiding generic Lipitor, suggesting it is not the same. Your take?

It's Caveat Emptor.

Canada does not have the controls on manufacturers that the United States has....a lot of pharmaceuticals marketed in other countries do not have to pass quality controls.

You may or may not be getting the active ingredient that you think youj are buying (there are a lot of counterfits out there)...you may or may not be getting the dose that you think you are buying (which can lead to underdosing or overdosing).

Tablet and capsule dissolution may not be up to par on some of these meds as well.

Lipitor is due out in the United States later this year. The generic version of Plavix will not be too far behind. (The generic version was indeed available in the States for a few months several years ago...a patent infringment lawsuit took it off of the market.

Drugs are protected by patent for 17 years. This does not mean 17 years from the time they are made available to the public...sometimes a brand name drug is only out a few years before generic manufactrers can market their versions.

There have been a LOT of drug recalls in the US just in the past year of generic drugs that have been deemed unsafe.

Again....Caveat Emptor when it comes to buying Canadian or Mexican...or Internet drugs in general.

I have no need to be part of this conversation, but, Rick, "Canada does not have the controls..." please.

https://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/dhp-mps/index-eng.php

Besides, they are the same companies - multi-nationals

There's been a lot of fake drugs come into the US from both the Northern and Southern borders. There have been a LOT of recalls of pharmaceuticals made in India.

While the Canadian equivalent of the US Food and Dug Administration is a valid entity..how do you explain the huge number of shipments of counterfit drugs from there to the US?

Before this post becomes political, we should admit to standing on two different sides of the fence and leave it at that.

I certainly did not mean to insult my Canadian neighbours...sorry.

Not denying fake drugs, but, not from reputable pharmacies online or otherwise. Nobody can regulate rip off artists but I don't think Canada (or even Mexico) is unique in that respect.

In that sense, you're absolutely right, Caveat Emptor. responded a little quickly because the response of many of the pharmaceuticals when people started crossing the border was "Canadian Drugs aren't as good" - when in fact, it was the same companies and the same product.
